Stunning "Big Healey" Variant, ith Overdrive Complete with Roadside Accessories & Weather Equipment Ideal Example to Show, rive, nd Tour In May of 1961 BMC upgraded their flagship model with three SU HS4 carburetors, odified valve springs and a new camshaft. Called the MKII, t was an alternative to the Triumph TR3A or Jaguar E-Type.
The MKII was initially offered as an occasional 4-seat roadster called the BT7 or the 2-seat variant from known as the BN7. Both versions used flat front windscreens and detachable side curtains in the style of a roadster. Equipment on the MKII included 15x4 chromed wire wheels, brake servo system and a tonneau cover that could be opened for just the driver.
The enlargement of its C-Series six-cylinder engine to 2,912cc, nd the adoption of Girling front disc brakes, ifferentiated the new-for-1959 Austin-Healey 3000 from the preceding 100/6. In 3000 form the rugged Austin six delivered 124bhp at 4,600rpm, ood enough for a top speed (in overdrive) of 114mph. Otherwise, he car remained much as the 100/6, hough the more-powerful disc brakes were a welcome improvement. The original 3000 was built from March 1959 to March 1961 as models BN7 Mark I (2-seater) and BT7 Mark I (2+2 version), ecoming known as the Mark I after the Mark II was released. Robust and tuneable, n its time the Big Healey was immensely popular with privateer racers and ralliers.
Today, orty years after production ceased, ealey 3000s continue to be extensively campaigned in historic motorsport, oth in tarmac events and on the rough stuff. Replicas of the works rally cars are among the most sought-after variants, nd an extensive cottage industry of recognised specialists exists to cater for the demand for Austin-Healey parts, ervicing and competition preparation.
