Description

I have a small collection of European classic cars and last year obtained this very nice 1972 BMW 2002 as part of a trade deal for another car in my collection. I've enjoyed driving it around town and taking it to our local Cars & Coffee. Now it's time to send it to a new owner to enjoy.
Unfortunately I did not get much of a recent history on the car except that for the past 15 years it was titled in South Carolina and then Virginia. It now has a clear Virginia title in my name.
I do have some very interesting history on the car from back in the 1970's and 80's however. This particular 2002 was well known in the Boston area by BMW enthusiasts. It was owned by Al Cath, he owner of Beaconwood Motors BMW and Beaconwood Audio- a BMW service center and high end car audio dealer in Boston. One of the photos below shows the original 1975 Massachussets title for the car and some reprints from the BMW enthusiast magazine "Roundel" (June 1985 issue) and "Installation News" a car audio trade magazine (March 1986). Cath had Beaconwood do a total restoration on the car when it had about 48,000 miles on the clock. He brought it back to show quality condition and installed a $8,500 audio system in the car. For many years this car sat on their showroom floor and was used as a "mobile listening room"to show customers what the ultimate in "state of the art" audio could sound like. Vestiges of that audio system are still in the car (multiple speakers custom built into both doors and rear deck lid). There are two high end pre-amps still in the trunk and can be seen in the photos. Today the car has a nice recent Alpine cd, m/fm stereo in the dash.
It appears from the 1975 title that the car was eventually transferred in 2000 (with 106,000 miles) and now has about 123,000 miles.
Here's info on the car as it was represented by Beaconwood BMW when it had 54,000 miles:
Rebuilt 4-speed transmission with new bearings and synchrosAlpina limited slip differential, 5% locking effect, :90:1Bilstein suspension modified by Beaconwood BMWAlpina quick ratio steeringBMW momo steering wheelAlpina wood shift knobVintage replacement chrome bumpers (from a 1973 2002)
I was told by prior owner that a newly rebuilt 138 hp tii engine was swapped in for the base engine at around 85,000 miles (so numbers obviously do not match). Engine has a chrome plated BMW cylinder head and stainless fuel lines.
The original interior was swapped out for a beautiful tan cloth interior from a similar vintage Alpina along with new carpet and BMW mats. The car now rides on a nice set of Hankook tires on early 1980's 325e vintage BMW bottle cap wheels. Full spare with original 1972 wheel and jack.
The years have resulted in some wear on the repaint from 1985 (Agave green) but as you can see from the photo's it still looks like near show quality from 15 feet. There is minor surface rust along the edge of the trunk lid and the sunroof rear edge. Both areas have been treated with POR15 and painted. There were small areas of rust in the usual areas near the front lower fenders...both have been cosmetically repaired with bondo and painted. I wanted a nice driver- not a show car. The next owner may decide, ike me to leave it as-is... or take care of these rust issues and repaint. The shock towers and trunk tub are perfect. It's very clean underneath and I have no oil drips on my garage floor. All windows are clear and crank up and down as they should. The sunroof opens and closes effortlessly.
This 2002 rides like it's on rails. The transmission shifts easily with no noises and the engine revs normally. No disappointments. Please note that fog lamps are not wired. There is one very small (2 inch) crack on the dash in the usual place near the bump for the speedo and tach, nd the lower passenger corner of the windshield has a small (1 inch) area that is delaminating/glazed).
Priced to sell. I've researched BMW 2002 prices of this vintage and condition for several months and believe you will not find another for the money close to this one.
Serious buyers only please. If you have feedback of less than "10" on Ebay, mail me before you make an offer or hit the "buy it now". If you have negative feedback- email me first or I will ignore your offer. I am happy to show by appointment. The car is garaged at my home, few miles from the airport in Charlottesville, a. Fly in and drive home if you'd like, r I will be happy to help load for your shipper.
