1988 BMW 325iC E30 RWD two door w/ 5sp manual transmission- 100% original and unmolested (other than the CD player, factory radio can be included with sale though). This car has been relegated to weekend use (BMW events) and was rarely taken out of the garage over the past 12 years. My father was a BMW collector and has downsized and moved south this past winter. Several family members inherited different cars, and I was lucky enough to get this one and a 1989 325i coupe. The coupe is also for sale in a separate posting, this ad is for the 1988 convertible only. I have no time to enjoy these with small twins and could use the garage space.
The interior is show quality. An auto restoration shop reupholstered the entire interior, front and back and installed a brand new top to the tune of $4500 only 1 year ago with less than 500 miles on the car since the work. The exterior is 100% rust free and the ORIGINAL paint still has a deep shine and is 9/10. The motor was completely rebuilt and refreshed and just about every wear and tear part has been replaced. All OEM parts from dealer with any repairs always done by a certified tech. That being said, the car could be driven across the country today with absolutely no issues.
Options
The car has the rare BMW sport seats, sport suspension, heated seats, and fog lights.
Overall Condition
Brand new PA inspection and emissions w/ stickers valid until March 2017. If you are not familiar with PA, this is a very thorough inspection that looks at everything (suspension, brakes, exhaust, emissions, rust, tires and almost any part that is wear and tear). All lubricants changed when inspection was done. A more complete list of recent repairs is shown below. There are no check engine lights lit. All power windows, tach, speedometer, lights, foglights, work fine. The car is one of the nicest originals you will find. In short, you don't see 5 sp E30 BMW's in this condition with original paint, crack-free dash, no rust (nowhere, not even under the battery tray), with fresh state inspections/emissions come around too often anymore. I tried to be very thorough with the pics and even took the seats out to show how clean the carpets are and how the the trunk wheel well is rust-free. I invite you to drive this after others with half the mileage and feel the difference. The car feels and drives like it has 20K miles.
Exterior
There are no dents or body damage. No accidents or work has ever been done to the body, straight as an arrow on every panel. The VIN numbers match everywhere. The paint on the body is original and still has a rich shine to it. The car was parked in a garage for the last 28 years and it looks that way. Even the chrome around the windows and bumpers is shiny and not the brown color that is seen on most that sit outside. The exterior is about as good as you will see for an original. Also, as mentioned there is zero rust. This car has the more desirable manual top (more desirable due to cost and reliability issues with the power motors as well as added weight). I would be more than happy to provide additional pics of wheel wells, undercarriage etc upon request to show there is zero rust anywhere.
Interior
I have taken the seats out for a couple of the pics in the ad just to show how clean the carpet and seats are. The carpet is clean and the mats are brand new BMW floor mats. The dash is perfect with no cracks and the trunk area is also. The only non-OEM part is the CD player installed but I will include the original BMW tape deck head unit to return to stock if desired. As mentioned, the interior is show quality. An auto restoration shop reupholstered the entire interior, front and back and installed a brand new top which cost $4500 only 1 year ago with less than 500 miles on the car since the work.
This car comes with everything it came with day one.... a full size spare with tire, fold up toolkit, lift jack, and owner's manual.
Mechanical
The original owner owned this car until 2003 (148K miles) and I have every single receipt for work, all done at the dealer - Otto's BMW. The second owner was my father who owned it until it was passed onto me this year along with the other 1989 325i coupe.
Approximately $7000 in mechanical work has been put into this car over the past 30K miles
The car currently has 182K miles (less than 7K miles/year) and the M20 2.5L inline-6 motor had a full top end rebuild done just 30k miles ago by a certified BMW tech, done thecorrectway as outlined below. All relevant maintenance such as timing belt/tensioner, accessory belts, and waterpump were done at the time as well. The motor runs as strong as ever and you will be hard pressed to find one that feels as smooth as this through the entire power range. These BMW OEM parts were all done during the engine build:
*Engine rebuild work cost $2800 done at 151K miles
Camshaft
Rockers and rocker eccentrics
Intake/Exhaust valve
Cylinder head gasket set
Valve springs inner/outer with valve stem seal kit
Throttle body gasket
Exhaust manifold gasket
Lower engine gasket kit
Timing belt w/tensioner
Pistons
Crank rod bearings
Oil pump
Cylinder head reconditioned at machine shop
All bolts for crank main and rod and head replaced
Other more recent work done on car since 155K miles:
Clutch/slave cylinder/master cylinder done at 155Kmiles ($1500 with receipts)
All BMW OEM struts on all fours corners done at 155K miles ($1400)
Four tires recently replaced - 80% tread left ($600)
New brake pads/rotors ($450)
All fluids and general tune-up items done. ($250)
Many other different random parts such as bushings, oil level sensor, relays, fuel pump, exhaust, plugs/cap/rotor etc have been replaced. (>$1000)
The car is 28 years old and will qualify for antique plates/emissions exempt if you chose to go that route next year (although I use standard plate on it with valid emissions stickers). I currently pay $11/month for full coverage classic car insurance.
