MotoeXotica is pleased to announce another cult classic from the ’70s, a crisp 1973 BMW 2002tii “Roundie.” Also known as a type 114, this 2002 was the epitome of performance available at the time with the forward-thinking design of Kugelfischer fuel injection. The market for these cars has started to move upward drastically in just the last year, this is a fleeting opportunity to obtain a relatively un-touched version before they get out of reach.

Dressed in Agave Green (code 071) paint, this 2002 tii shows very well on the outside. The paint is in good shape, with minimal blemishes upon close inspection. All glass pieces are intact and have appropriate appearance relative to the car’s age. All exterior lights are intact and clear and cornering lights display minor cracks that in no way affect their operation. The bumpers show some blemishes but display a lot of shine. The car has 14-inch BMW alloy wheels that show minimal wear and curb contact and the car rides on four new Starfire RS-C 2.0 all-season radial tires, 195/60R14. Body panels are all laser straight and look good and there is a locking fuel filler cap. The trunk has decent undercoating sprayed on the rear wheelwells.

Inside, the car features an aftermarket steering wheel with extra-thick rim. The black full leather seating has worn well overall, as has the matching carpet. Most of the interior trim is present and the white headliner contrasts nicely with the rest of the interior. The odometer is inoperative but the dashboard is in good shape and all other instrumentation works as designed. plus there is a JVC AM/FM stereo with CD player and two four-inch circular speakers, one in each door. In the very nice trunk is the car’s original steering wheel.

Car comes with two owner’s handbooks, overseas service station guide, Blaupunkt RPD 552 stereo manual, more than $13,000 in service receipts, former registration forms and various other materials related to the car.

From 1997 to 1999, a Ms. Joselovitch owned this Roundie when she lived in Agoura Hills, California. In 1999, she sold the car to a Mr. Navales, who lived in Los Angeles. That year, he noted the car lacked power and got poor mileage so he had the engine partially rebuilt – removed and replaced cylinder head, a complete valve job, new gasket, rebuilt fuel injection system, replaced fuel injectors, tune-up and an oil change. In 2004, Navales had major body work done to the car, starting with a complete repaint in the current Agave Green. He also had the headliner, carpet and upholstery replaced as well as the dashboard removed and reinstalled. Other major repairs he touched on at that time include re-chroming front and rear bumpers, new kidney grill, new windshield and a chrome molding kit, among others.

In early 2005, a Mr. Aranda, of Indianapolis, Indiana, purchased the car. That year, he just had regular maintenance done to the car and replaced trim pieces and badging. During the summer of 2006, the clutch failed so Aranda had its master and slave cylinders replaced. In February of 2012, he had the coolant and brake fluid replaced, the left rear wheel cylinder replaced and the emergency brake lever was lubricated. He also had the car checked for fuel and exhaust leaks. In July 2014, he had the oil, coolant and brake fluid all flushed and refilled. In March of 2016, Aranda discovered the car wouldn’t start when he went to remove it from winter storage. Normally, each spring he would jump start the car the first time and it started. This time, it refused to turn over. The battery was three to four years old. Battery was charged and tested, another jump start tried but car wouldn’t crank. Additional diagnosis found the cable-to-body harness broken at battery terminal and terminal showed heavy corrosion. Battery was replaced, yellow acid pad installed, cable replaced and terminal cleaned.

The 2002 joined BMW’s model stable for 1968 and lasted through 1976. By 1973, the 2002 came in its best-loved shape, with the rounded taillamps and heavier, safety-mandated bumpers that didn’t detract from the car’s sporty good looks.

Helmut Werner Bönsch, BMW’s director of product planning, and Alex von Falkenhausen, designer of the M10 engine, each had a two-liter engine installed in a 1600-2 for their respective personal uses. When they realized they had both made the same modification to their own cars, they prepared a joint proposal to BMW’s board to manufacture a two-liter version of the 1600-2. At the same time, American importer Max Hoffman asked BMW for a sporting version of the 02 series that could be sold in the United States. The 2.0 engine was sold in two states of tune: the base single-carburetor 2002 producing 101 hp and the dual-carburetor high compression 2002 ti producing 119 hp. The 2002 tii used the fuel-injected (130 hp) engine from the 2000 tii, which resulted in a top speed of 115 mph.
