The BMW 2002 is the car that "made" BMW the force that it is today in the American car market. The salient adjectives for the 2002 are: fast nimble reliable great looking sporty comfortable with room for five (and groceries too!).
The present car was converted from a 2002 to a 2002 Tii through the addition of 1972 BMW 2002 Tii engine and brake components including the booster and calipers. Tii control arms were also added. The engine pulls hard and boosts the stock horsepower from 96 to approximately 130 hp. Braking performance is greatly enhanced with the addition of 4 piston calipers on the front brakes (verses the stock 2 piston calipers).
This car's driving dynamics and stance have been greatly improved by the prior owner who added Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs on all four corner. The car's ride is comfortable but sporty and aggressive. The car can corner very hard with only slight body roll yet still be driven as an enjoyable daily driver. The car comes with the original shocks and springs. The car sits on BBS rims with newer tires having over 90% of their tread left.
In addition to the foregoing the prior owner replaced the motor mounts the thermostat the alternator bushings and belt the clutch fuel pump o-rings hazard flasher switch and all sunroof cables and seals. The sunroof opens and closes easily and there are no signs of rust in the sunroof area. Finally the prior owner replaced the muffler and exhaust pipe.
After I purchased the car I replaced the battery with a correct Bosche battery had the engine tuned and performed an oil and filer change. I have owned and driven this car for roughly one year and have enjoyed it greatly. During my ownership of the car I have had no major issues with the car. The car runs drives starts stops and performs exactly as it should and is truly a joy to drive. It does not overheat and has been a pleasure to own. While the car is not perfect it is in very good condition for its year and age.
The car's chrome pieces are all present and in acceptable condition with slight wear. The paint is in driver condition and has some obvious cosmetic flaws (but no signs of filler). I have not seen any rust bubbles on the car nor have I seen any obvious signs of accident damage. There are two or three spots on the car where surface rust has formed but it does not appear to be anything more than that i.e. it is not cancerous or bubbling. The car can be driven with the paint in its current condition and the surface rust can be treated with simple rust preventer e.g. Jasco.
The bottom side of the car is solid but there is a small amount of rust on both passenger and driver floor boards. A set of OEM floor boards accompany the car if replacement is desired. In my opinion replacement of the floor boards is not required and the car can be driven "as is where is."
The car's interior is equipped with aftermarket black vinyl seats which are comfortable and supportive. A set of original BMW seat from a 1968 2002 will be sold with the car. The original seats will need recovering but are otherwise in acceptable condition. The door cards and carpet are blue and are original to the car. The rear seat is also blue and is original to the car. The dash pad is cracked in two places and needs to be either replaced or covered with a dash cap. If necessary a dash cap can be drop shipped to the new owner of the car. The car has an aftermarket stereo and an elaborate speaker / amplifier system.
There are numerous spare parts in the car's trunk e.g. floor boards stock springs original calipers etc. The car also comes with a complete set of glass i.e. front windshield rear windshield and side windows. The car also comes with a car cover to protect it from UV radiation and dust and an extra set of BMW rims (from a 2003 BMW Z3).
Finally the car comes equipped with working A/C which easily cools the interior of the car. The AC system is freshly serviced and it does not leak refridgerant (meaning you do not have to recharge it any time soon).
In sum this car is a good example of a driver quality BMW 2002 Tii clone. It can be driven and enjoyed as is or it can be be used to form the basis of a stellar restoration. Its positive attributes greatly outweigh its negative ones and virtually everything needed for a concours level restoration is present. Thus you can buy drive and enjoy it today and restore it in the future.
