1973 BUICK CENTURION 455 CONVERTIBLE

HISTORY

The Buick Centurion was sold by Buick from 1971 through 1973, replacing the Buick Wildcat as the sporty rendition of Buick's full-size car. The Centurion name was inspired by a Buick concept car. That name coming from the professional officer in the Roman Army. The current car's symbol was not the traditional Buick tri-shield, but a side profile of a centurion. It was not, as some have suggested, a play on the Buick Century.

The 1973 Buick Centurion featured in this auction was purchased by the current owners parents to mark their 30th wedding anniversary. They had been married during WWII in Vernon, Texas where he was a secondary flight instructor for the Army Air Corps. At that time they were driving a 1942 Plymouth convertible and decided another convertible was in order to mark their anniversary. This Buick was used as the wife’s daily driver in Bloomington, Indiana until she retired from teaching in 1980. The husband then drove it for the next 10 years before having the car freshened up and converted to a sunny day driver. From 1990 till the present the car will typically have the top put down on April 1st and left down till the leaves turn colors in the fall. It then has gone into winter hibernation in the garage with the top up again. This car is equipped with the High performance 455 4 barrel engine, 400 Turbo Hydramatic transmission, Factory chrome road wheels, air conditioning, Power windows, AM/FM mono radio and Tinted glass. The original sale papers, the build sheet and much of the repair history is included. There is also a small box of spares included. The current mileage is 159,455. This is the actual mileage.

CONDITION

The 455 makes nice power and the car runs, drives and stops just like it should with no noises or vibrations. There is a nice matched set of whitewall radial tires with deep tread on the Buick factory road wheels. All of the lights and gauges work. The air conditioning system is all in place, but has not been charged for many years. The Power windows and top work fine. The AM/FM radio is operational. The clock is inop. The wipers work. The windshield washers are at least low on fluid. There is some rust on the drivers side front inner fender. The rest of the car is remarkably rust free. The car has very presentable paint and chrome. One of the repair receipts shows the car had some damage to the drivers side when it was nearly new. This car has always been garaged! It has a nice original interior and top boot. There are some splits in the front seat bottoms depicted in the photos. The original carpets are very nice. The convertible top is old, but serviceable, see photos.
