Description
Rare Barn find. 53. 00 original miles. This Buick was found in a storage facility. I herd about it through the grape vine that it had to be sold even though this car was the love of his life. It was in storage in a gentleman’s barn in Loveland CO for over 20 years. It seems he lost his house and his place to work on it around 7 years ago. 2008/2009 poor economy. so it was moved to a storage facility where the owner of the facility told him to pay his bill or he would sell the car. long story short I acquired it from the owner in a short sale and spent the next FOUR years restoring it. It was a true basket case or cases as this case was. The previous owner had visions of grandeur and ran out of funds. it was disassembled and placed in unlabeled boxes for over twenty years. This was what saves these cars. as it was not on the road for those twenty plus years. The first two years I owned the car was just trying to make an inventory. If you never want to see anyone with the same vehicle as you at a car show then this is the car for you. Muscle car power with luxury style and class. drop top with working A/C cars just don't come any cooler than this one! Think GTO but with much more class. These is a Very Rare 1968 Buick GS400 Convertible. many people don't know about these cars as they are not GTO's. Camaros. or Chevelles. The GS line in the Skylark body (A-Body) was available in coupe or convertible the convertible GS only came in the 400 guise. There are far fewer GS's then GTO's and Chevelles. Restoration and replacement parts are far more expensive and harder to per-quire than the other GM A-body models. Hard numbers production: 6. 6 liters and 400cid 340HP 440IB FT torque. turbo 400 automatic transmission. 2. 93 open rear end (only way this one was offered). Less than 2. 00 convertible GS 400 made. approximately 1. 00 with an automatic transmission. A/C cars were not offered with the dealer installed cowl style ram air option in 1968. Please take a close look at this Buick GS 400 Convertible it has so many options. it must have been purchased by a Doctor or Lawyer. as this car would have cost $5500 to $6000 new back in 1968. This was for the person who could afford a high end Corvette. but wanted a back seat. Look at this option list: little thing like console. sport wheel. AM/FM radio. and much larger items such as Ice cold A/C. and power windows are not the norm on a muscle car. but to have these items with a convertible top is almost unheard of. For those of who here it so very often it is a low mileage vehicle it was only driven to church on Sunday etc. Here is how your can tell a line of BS on one of these old cars. Look at the odometer. one cannot tell if the odometer has rolled or not. this is just not true. once on odometer has rolled the numbers will no longer be in and even line. Look at this odometer the picture is worth a thousand words. Let me tell you how this came to be. The story of this cars life is a short list of owners all from Colorado. This vehicle was purchased new from Denver Buick. it was sold to an owner in Arvada drove it until it stopped running in the 1985 time frame. after it became a gas guzzler and was started to be stored outside. It was then sold to a man in Loveland who had visions of grandeur as far as a restoration and performance build that started in 1991. a parts car was acquired and parts were taken off and lost. some were labeled. some not. and many boxes of stuff happened (much of which was not labeled). This gentleman started with a frame and some body repairs. but life happened and car got moved from a barn to a storage unit to another until the car was sold to me in a mountain of stuff that took TWO YEARS to catalog and organize into a useful lot of parts. What has been done at this point? A full frame off restoration with as many NOS and factory used parts. that could be used. Engine has the correct block. heads. intake. and exhaust manifolds. it has a 69 GS 400 automatic carburetor. like I said the previous owner was going to make it a hot rod. but the Holley carb/Edelbrock intake didn't make the cut for this build. all the parts even the air cleaner and all heat riser are correct and original to the car. The engine block was over bored (this was done almost 20 years ago) when there were no such things as replacement pistons in overbore sizes could be had. Because of this it a now a 430 cubic inch engine. it has a mild cam that is very similar to the stage 1 cam that came in 1969. I had a very well trusted high end machine shop go through everything that was done 20 years ago all checked out great. Assembly was done by me and one of my mechanics. Runs great but needs a steeper gear to properly propel this vehicle. Transmission and rear differential have been rebuilt and most parts needed no replacement. but it has all been checked. Suspension and steering parts have been rebuilt and or replaced. Ac has been converted to R134A and is ice cold. Radiator and heater core have been cleaned and are in great shape. Again as many parts that were original have been left so. as it is original only once. The front seats are in their original material. as are the rear door/side panels. dash pad. kick panels. seat belts. console. gauges. and radio (AM/FM). The front door panels and the rear seat covers have been replaced as the door panels were water damaged and the rear seat was sun damaged. the carpet is replacement as it was a miss as well. the convertible top is the correct replacement with the glass rear window. Exterior of vehicle speaks for itself. but here is the nuts and bolts. It received replacement quarter panels and that is it. too much parking lot damage. and a small amount of rust the the lower rear area. The pans in this car were awesome as well as the fenders and doors. hood and deck lid. I have restored almost 30 cars. mostly GTO's. and this is by far the most rust free vehicle I have ever worked on. It has the Denver Buick badge as it did from the day it was delivered. It is painted the correct color and has the correct color interior. Paint is a base/clear PPG system. Tires are not the correct tires. they are radials. as radials are so much nicer than the pias tires these vehicles came with. this is a wear item and if you want the correct tires they are available. Rims are correct sport type and have incorrect center caps (newer style that I prefer. have the correct ones and they go with vehicle). Brakes: ALL GS 400 cars in 1968 came with drums on all four corners. rears are cast iron the fronts are aluminum as they are and should be on this vehicle. This is not everything but it is the major highlights. questions call me at 303-847-6852
