Description

Description: Now up for sale by private San Diego seller is this a very original. formerly orange-plate. rust free. solid driver. Original matching power-train and low mileage. Professionally restored in 2014 & 2105. Including this seller. this 1940 Chevrolet Coupe. Master Deluxe is only a 3 owner car since new. with the first family owning it for the first 70 years. They first purchased it in Los Angeles in 1940. and has always been in So Cal. It intentionally still wears its original 75 year old Mayland Black factory paint. Next owner could repaint if they preferred that look. or only repaint the 2 front fenders which has the majority of the paint wear. The cars' interior. entire powertrain. undercarriage and trunk have been restored preserving 90%+ of it's original parts and assemblies. Its' factory powertrain is the straight 6 cylinder. 216 cid; 3-speed manual with nicely working vacuum assist; and a differential now upgraded to 3. 73. In 2014 when the powertrain was being restored. each shop commented on the originality and minimal wear condition of the internals even before rebuilding it. The initial restoration goal was to make this automobile a semi-show original driver. offering it to the next owner as a very sound automobile. We think that was achieved. Current California title and registration. No lien holders. OWNERSHIP:Purchased new by the Szabo family of Los Angeles at the time. Second owner purchased the car in 2010. Sold to current owner who performed all the restoration from April 2014 to March 2015. ORIGINALITY:Style/Model #40-1517; Body # S494 made in FIsher Body plant in St. Louis. MO. 494th body of that style. Paint code 273. Mayland Black. Engine #2973300. See photos of both serial number tag (floor) and body tag (firewall). This is a "KH" (Master Deluxe) automobile as indicated on the tag (6KH12). Trim code 97. During restoration. the initial internal inspection & evaluation of entire drivetrain from engine builder. transmission shop. and differential shop gave evidence that the 78. 80 miles on the odometer may very likely be the total and original mileage. Even with it being a west coast car its' entire life. the rust factor was amazingly minimal in all the typical suspect places from top to bottom. with only surface rust in certain areas. No signs of accidents. body repair. repaint. or panel replacement whatsoever. Engine number and drivetrain factory original as validated by original title with engine #2973300. All original identification plates (firewall and floor on passenger side) intact and matching. Original 1940 CA license plate (2Z186) went with this car. Included in purchase. Date stamp on chassis rear of passenger side rear fender shows 11-30-39. MAIN RESTORATION OBJECTIVESMaintain the body unmolested and leave the original Mayland Black factory paint intact. Rebuild entire drivetrain to create a reliable and safe driver. Improve overall braking. better final gearing. and improvement of engine breathing. Rebuild/replace certain suspension components for improved ride quality. KEY RESTORATION WORK:Engine/Exhaust: (Jacobs Engineering) Original stock 216 cid got a complete rebuild with 60 over aluminum pistons for less weight and quieter operation. Babbitt material was seen to be in excellent condition. New oil and fuel pump with dual filters for the latter. Aeroquip oil lines for safety. Fenton dual headers installed coupled to dual exhaust system (Master Exhaust and Brake) for improved breathing. And it sound ain't bad either! Motor at 120-125lbs compression. Rebuilt original Carter W-1 carburetor by San Diego Carburetor. All new motor/trans mounts of course. New all 3 core all aluminum radiator by Superior Radiator. No oil or water leaks whatsoever. Excellent oil pressure at 15 lbs idle and higher when driving. and water temperature (180-195). very accurate gas gauge. and ammeter. New drivetrain has less than 100 miles on it. If you want to hear the engine start and run from a cold start on YouTube. contact me. Transmission: (Oceanside Transmission) Inspection reveals original gears were in fine condition. Bearings and seals replaced. The vacuum assist shifting unit works excellent. Grinds like these transmissions do when cold. and then gradually diminishes as the car heats up. Differential: (ProGear) Final drive gears changed from stock 4. 11:1 to 3. 73's for higher speed driving. Brakes: We did not go to front discs because then we could not have used the original stock wheels. There was no source we found that had a 6 lug disc. Instead. a hefty dual port master cylinder was built with one-way pressure relief valves to create stronger independent front and rear braking. New shoes. resurfaced drums. new wheel cylinders. new brake lines by Crown Performance . Fresh new emergency brake cable installed. Electrical: Maintaining the 6 volt system for originality. 90% of the car was rewired (with spares added) . New fused master headlight switch installed. All lights. horns. radio. and gauges operational. Master shut-off switch. All bulbs replaced. New 650 cca battery. Inspected and rebuilt original generator and starter done by Automotive Electrical Services. Turn signal and 4-way flasher functions added. Original AM radio rebuilt and works as it should. Station “memory” buttons show original Los Angeles stations that it was set to back in the day (3 letter station numbers). Original non-operational clock. Suspension: Rebuilt knee action shocks. New front springs. New front stabilizer bar bushings and linkage. New wheel bearings. Interior: (Kiwi Kustoms) Complete interior restoration using stock bench seat. Choice of fabric based on western climate was intentionally not mohair. but rather a very high quality tweed. Seat is super supportive and firm and did not require new springs. Original rear wood deck piece was restored. Sound deadening Dynamat installed under carpet. While carpet is not stock we chose it for a quieter ride and plusher interior. It is a quiet ride. Cleaned/sealed the 18 gallon fuel tank. Re-wood-grained dashboard and all window garnishes. Original factory floor tag plate exposed. 80% original glass is stock and all removed to fit all new seals (AG Glass). Exterior: Body panel gaps and alignment (doors. hood. trunk. fenders) are impressively parallel and correct and have been even before restoration. Only the new mouldings. while breaking in. push the doors and trunk lid out a bit. but over time they will compress. All window. trunk. door. and running board mouldings replaced (Steele Rubber Products). Triple chrome plating for original bumpers. grill. trim and miscellaneous pieces done by Pacific Plating. Various components such as bumper brackets. radiator support. hood brace. were powder coated (Powder One). Undercarriage: Pressure cleaned. detailed and coated with Eastman Chassis Black. No hidden rust. Paint: As best as can be determined. this is the original 1940 Mayland Black factory paint. Some buyers prefer the new paint job. We preferred preserving the history. The mid-ground could be that the new owner paints the 4 fenders only where the majority of the wear is. There are some rough and peeled spots from 75 years of existence on the hood. the front driver fender. and the rear passenger fender. But overall for it's age. the paint is in very good condition and responded well to detailing. There is a very shallow mild 3" ding in the front driver side fender. Using products from Autogeek. net and Griots Garage. nbsp;the car was clayed. compounded. glazed 3 times. and waxed twice in March of 2015. Wheels/Tires: Original 6 x 16" steel wheels were powder coated to match the original red stripes on sides of car and the hood. New General Jet 600-16 whitewall tires (Lucas Tire) have less than 50 miles on them. New beauty rings and hubcaps. Spare wheel/tire and original jack in the trunk. Sources: Some restoration parts were primarily purchased new from The Filling Station in Oregon. We were very pleased with their quality and customer service. Independent sellers of a few very difficult to find NOS were also used. All receipts available. Most parts for the entire car are very accessible at reasonable prices. The car measures 192" overall. New owner gets all the photos of the complete restoration process. shop manuals. critical specs. all receipts. and any spares. A great automobile that is comfortable. reliable. fun to drive. and look at. Not many available in this condition and originality. It just came back from the GoodGuys Del Mar show and received their Award of Excellence. Not interested in low offers. Serious buyers can email or call me at 858-699-1207. Fifteen year eBay member.
