Description

This classic car was just 'rescued' from a barn on March 18th where it had sat for 18 years and with a little gas and a battery she came back to life. Due to the years of neglect and consequent cosmetic damage this car needs some restoration and the following information is being provided for all of those people out there who are looking for a good builder who have the skill set to do it them self, and end up with a car that is worth substantially more than their investment, or to those who will have someone else restore the car and not be upside down at the end of it. This car, in restored condition, will bring 35 to 50k. One of the attractive features of this car is that it is a convertible with factory AC and even after all of the years of sitting in a barn covered by debris when I turned on the AC the clutch engaged and I suspect that with a little freon it will blow icy cold. The production number for a convertible 65 with AC is very low. Under the hood is a 350 that has obviously had some work done to it with a Holley 4 barrel carb, headers and HEI ignition. The engine is mated to a turbo 350 automatic transmission and a non posi 10 bolt rear end, gear ratio unknown but tall, highway compatible gears. I have driven this car less than three miles but the motor and transmission are both very strong. It will smoke the rear tire and chirp when it shifts. All that has been done to it is change out the spark plugs and spray about a can of carb cleaner into the carburetor. The motor makes no ticking or clacking noises, blows no blue smoke and the transmission doesn't clunk or shift hard. It smells like it is running rich and probably needs to have the carb rebuilt to remove the varnish of 18 year old gas. So, for those planning expenses for a restoration, pull the motor out, clean it, replace the valve cover gaskets, the oil pan gasket and repaint it. The car has power steering and manual drum brakes. The suspension and steering element of this car probably feels much like it did coming out of the factory. There is no slop in the steering box and it goes straight down the road without pulling to either side, neither does it make any clunking noises. If you're content with the car handling like it did new then no expense there either. The exterior body is in great shape without any rust that has penetrated and only some surface rust where the paint has peeled off. In 50 years of life this car has had only one repaint and so you have a body where the ridges of the metal and various design form is very clear and taking this car down to metal would be very simple. On both rear quarters there is minor damage from an accident of some sort where bondo was used to smooth out the shallow dent. The metal in this area is accessible through the trunk and would be very easy to pop out and repair correctly. Furthermore, the car fits together very good and the reveals are near perfect. There is no evidence of any bad collision. The glass on this car is excellent. The windshield doesn't even have wiper tracks nor any tiny rock chips. There is no de-lamination of the glass and no discoloring. The convertible top is in good enough shape for a very nice driver build. There is no de-threading or tears and the back window is very clear and supple. All of the gauges and electrical on this car work. The lights, turn signals, speedometer, fuel gauge, oil pressure, etc., all work and there is a working stereo in the uncut opening for the original radio. The car has sat for weeks now and the battery doesn't drain. The wheels are Cragars and a short while back I did a light polishing of them and they cleaned up nice. I also took some steel wool to the bumpers and they would be fine for a very nice driver. The tires are 18 plus years old and I wouldn't take them out on the highway for long even though by the tread depth they are close to new. Another fact that commends this car for restoration is how available and inexpensive parts are. One can purchase an entire interior with seat covers, door panels, kick panels, carpet, etc. for under $600.00. Go on ebay in the vintage parts and accessories category and see for yourself. These cars are very popular with lots still on the road and the after market parts guys have to compete with each other to the consumer's advantage. The bad. The front passenger side floor pan has rust that has penetrated and needs to be patched or replaced. This floor pan can be purchased on ebay and delivered to your door for $50.00. Tear up the carpet, cut out the old and weld in the new. I need to mention that the gas tank has a substantial dent in the bottom of it. The last photo is of the rusted floor pan. I have one negative feedback in 9 years on Ebay from an individual who purchased a FRESHLY restored 1956 Chevy with a built 454, four speed Muncie "rock crusher, rack and pinion steering, all new interior (frame off restored), for 25k (STOLE THE CAR). When the buyer contacted me he hesitantly made the $500.00 Paypal deposit and then informed me that he had decided to wait until he could drive out to my home in two weeks before paying the remainder AFTER he laid hands on the car! I explained to the buyer that when he clicked the bid confirmation button he had purchased the car and he got upset and wanted to back out of the transaction. I was happy to refund his money and when I relisted the car, within an hour, a classic car dealer called me and offered 30k to end the auction and I did. He stole the car as well. A few hours later I found that the original purchaser left negative feedback and there was no way to get it removed. If you as a bidder don't understand that you are entering into a legally binding contract upon bidding go bother someone else.
