And. while that might seem like an easy inquiry to answer. the truth is: We're not really sure. It's not that we have anything against Chevy's coolest utility. it's just that we haven't found the right one to feature. That is. until now. 1 of 5 El Caminos listed in the National L79 Registry. this freshly restored trucklet is a museum worthy masterpiece that's only known one drivetrain and two meticulous owners. If you're shopping for a choice classic that puts a unique spin on an old school favorite. you're looking at your next car!BODYWORK/TRIMOriginally assembled at GM's Fremont manufacturing facility. this fully sorted Elco was sold at Ellis Chevrolet in Lincoln City. Oregon and remained in the same state for close to 45 years. During the car's ground-up restoration. conducted in late 2012 by Northwest House of Hardtops of Portland. its body was completely disassembled. massaged into a laser-straight canvas and expertly detailed to provide top-notch fit and finish. Once the builders attained better-than-factory panel alignment. traditional Marina Blue 2-stage was accented with fresh trim and buffed to an incredible shine. And presently. driven roughly 30 miles since leaving the paint booth. this Chevy wraps a high quality restoration in a super clean appearance that's simply stunning. ENGINEGlance under this Malibu's mirror-slick hood and you'll find an original. 327 cubic inch small block V8 that follows an L79-specific "ER" assembly stamp with a correct 3892657 casting number. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill. a polished and decaled air cleaner feeds oxygen to a correct 3806 Holley. which is centered on a familiar Winters intake. That air/fuel mixture travels to factory-spec 462 heads. which ride between shielded exhaust manifolds. and polished and "Chevrolet" branded valve covers. At the back of those valve covers. a correct distributor shoots spark through fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. And in front of those cables. a correct radiator drains water through GM-branded hoses and old school tower clamps. Aesthetically. the virtually spotless small block contrasts well against the car's satin engine bay and intense fenders. And everything. from a snug Delco battery topper and polished oil filler to a correct alternator and factory-spec emissions equipment. has been professionally installed and completely detailed. DRIVETRAINWhat good would a killer engine be without a tough drivetrain and solid suspension to back it up? Behind the car's thundering 327. an original Muncie 4-speed utilizes an original 12-bolt axle to spin a correct posi-traction differential around correct 3. 55 gears. That road-ready drivetrain is held off the ground by a fully rebuilt suspension. which backs a Saginaw steering gear and rebuilt drum brakes with boxed control arms and correct spiral shocks. At the center of that correctly tagged chassis. aluminized exhaust pipes run from the aforementioned manifolds to aggressive turbo mufflers. while fresh fluid lines run from the aforementioned Holley to a new stainless fuel tank. At the corners of the car. 14-inch steelies twist Firestone Wide Oval Super Sport redlines around polished and bowtie-branded hubcaps. And overall. the bottom of this awesome A-Body has been restored to the same high standards as its solid exterior panels and clean engine compartment. INTERIOROpen this sedan's broad doors and you'll find an attractive Black interior that was completely replaced during the car's extensive restoration. In the middle of that interior. a fresh bench seat suspends plush vinyl skin over pliable foam padding. Beneath that seat. like-new carpet centers a curved shifter between color-keyed. "EL CAMINO" branded floor mats. At the edge of that carpet. fresh. fade-free side panels. which are branded with straight stainless trim. give the cockpit some much needed pop. In front of the driver. a satin-finished Chevrolet Rally wheel laps standard Chevelle telemetry. a correct pushbutton radio and classy dash trim. And behind the passengers. a stainless-trimmed. body-matched bed appears to have never hauled anything more than dust.
