Description

1941 Chrysler New Yorker Rare body style Runs and drives Needs full restoration Here up for bids is this super rare '41 New Yorker three-window. Just 771 of these coupes were made for 1941. shared between two models; the Saratoga and the New Yorker. Extremely hard to find in any condition. This car does run and drive but will obviously need a complete restoration. Click to enlarge any of the images below. OR click here to view a gallery of all of the enlarged images. The car wears an ancient repaint. it was originally Polo Green. code 915. single body color. The sheet metal on this old gal is pretty straight with no major damage. Rust is confined mainly to the sills with some small areas on the floor pans needing patch work. Overall pretty nice. undercarriage pictures are shown below. Both bumpers are very straight. good candidates for rechroming. Front bumper over-riders are included. The windshield is held in place loosely. it will need to be replaced along with the side and vent windows. Vent windows right now are plexiglass place holders. I have the original vent windows for patterns but not the frames. I do have the back glass and garnish molding. both are included. a picture of them are shown further below. The grill is undamaged. all of the trim is complete. some in better shape than others. The car began life in the Bay Area and came to Oregon sometime in the 60's based on the license plates. They are included with the car. Most of the chrome is in very good condition with not a lot of pitting. Emblems are all complete but will need to be restored. The signature of Business Coupes are their gargantuan trunks. this Chrysler is no exception. Trunk looks like a wreck but is fairly solid. The areas that need the most attention are towards the rear. at the body mount points. see photos. Big job ahead here but the good news is that the original floor pans are miraculously hanging in there after 74 years. The original upholstery will be good for patterns. the seat itself is sound and restorable. Some metal work will be needed near the sills. the running boards are sound. Amp and oil pressure gauge are operational. lights are not working. Original key set. Radio pre-set buttons show San Francisco area stations. Windows wind freely. VIN tag in place. Hidden Budd body plate on passenger door. If you're not familiar with the Budd Company's fascinating history. this link has some good info. Solid roof. Pass through door. Original spare rim and trim ring. Very solid floors. Shown below is the back glass and garnish molding along with assorted spares. The previous owner went through the car mechanically 30 miles ago. List of work done: New flywheel. clutch pressure plate and throwout bearing. New brakes. thermostat. spark plug wires and fuel pump. Drums turned. gas tank cleaned. new radiator hoses installed and complete tune up performed. For as rough as it looks. the car actually runs pretty well. I wouldn't jump in and hit the road just yet but it will definitely make it to the trailer under its own power. Saratogas and New Yorkers came standard with the Spitfire Straight Eight. the engine block shows the C30 stamp that is correct for this car. The Fluid Drive transmission shifts properly and releases as designed at a stop. This car is overdrive equipped but I have not driven it at speed to see if it functions. I'd recommend going through the car to the point where you feel comfortable driving it. Brakes sometimes need an extra pump of the pedal to come to life. The motor smokes some on startup and I've noticed some minor weeping from one of the freeze plugs. No bottom end noise or issues there. The car shows decent oil pressure. idles smoothly and revs nicely. The 2nd photo below shows the sill repair that is needed. Otherwise this Chrysler is pretty solid and original. a rare car worthy of being brought back. Click here for a gallery of all of the enlarged images.
