Description

Offered for sale is my personal 1972 Datsun 240Z. Introduced in 1969, he 240Z revolutionized the sports car industry and by 1972 it had blossomed into the icon of the decade. This example has been gradually upgraded and improved in the spirit of the era; I wouldn’t hesitate to hit the road and drive anywhere, nd know I would enjoy every second of it.

I purchased the car 7 years ago from California, t was an automatic car with only 44,000 miles, he previous owner had purchased it off it’s original owner and it literally had been owned by a woman for it’s entire life. So all that makes me the 3rd owner, nd I’m sad to have to part with my lovely car.

We soon discovered that the old head was warped and beyond saving, o it was replaced with a rebuilt head and the engine was thoroughly inspected and gone over at the time. Based on this information, ’d say the miles are original and the odometer has not rolled-over.

I began my improvements by changing out the transmission to a 5-speed; I pulled one out of a running/driving 1979 280ZX and installed it along with a 12lb lightweight flywheel and CenterForce Stage 1 clutch-pack. It’s been running and shifting awesome since then, ’ve put on about 5,000 miles on since changing it all out.

Since the car was originally an automatic, t has 3.54 gears in the rear-end, his means that it is not a rocket off the line, ut instead has great top-end performance. Manual transmission cars were equipped with 3.90 or 4.10 gears for better off the line speed.

Wheels and tires were updated to a set of Silver Konig Rewinds size: 16x7-4x114.3; tires are 205/55R16 in the front and 215/55R16 in the rear. This set-up grips the road extremely well, nd they really fill the wheel-wells properly. I do have the original 14” Mag-Wheels that have fresh Firestone Affinity Touring tires on them, hey could potentially be included in the sale if things work out. Spare tire is a 5th Mag-wheel, hat goes with the car no matter what.

Car has been lowered 2” with Staag lowering struts and coil springs, t the same time, e replaced all the bushings and rubber on the chassis and installed front and rear anti-roll bars, fter installing all these parts, he car was laser-aligned and it drives like a dream. You can go hard into a turn and there’s almost zero body roll or drama.

Even after lowering the car and installing wider and taller tires, here is no rubbing or scraping on anything, verything functions as it should and fits properly.

The engine has a few upgrades as well, he stock SU carbs were rebuilt about 7,000 miles ago by Dana Britton at SUCarbs.com, nd they have since then been tuned bi-annually for summer vs. winter driving. The air intake has been updated to a Cold-Air intake provided by uniquezproducts.com, his really helps out with only drawing outside air, ncreasing power and also makes changing the air-cleaner much easier. I do have the stock air-cleaner cover and will include it if the buyer is interested.

Since these cars commonly have vapor-lock issues when using ethanol fuels, wrapped the stock fuel line with heat-wrap, nd installed an inline fuel pump that is operated via a switch in the cabin; this way, t runs on the stock mechanical pump until you have issues and you can kick in the electric unit to boost your pressure.

After the original mechanical clutch fan went out, decided to update the cooling system and installed a pair of 12” electric fans that were professionally installed and tied into the ignition system so that anytime the engine is running, he fans are pushing air through the radiator, nd into the engine bay. The old fan was then removed and the pulley spins normally.

The stock 240Z alternator has been upgraded to a Turbo-280ZX unit, hich not only has an internal regulator, ut also has 70amp output vs the 40amp stock unit. This was done with Motorsport Auto’s upgrade kit, nd I’ve had zero issues since then.

The car has had the headlights upgraded to H4-spec bulbs, hese were just installed 3 months ago and really make a difference in visibility at night

Standard tune-ups have been regularly performed and I always use parts from 240Z suppliers, ever auto-parts stores and no discount parts were ever installed on this car. The brakes have always been looked after and parts like pads, otors, nd shoes have been replaced when needed.

The engine does leak oil from the timing cover gasket, f I were going to be keeping the car, was planning on tearing it down and fixing the issue. It’s not really bad or concerning, ust more a nuisance than anything. If you’ve ever had to maintain these old cars, ou know that leaks are a consistent hassle. This car had a NOS oil pan installed to fix a separate leak I dealt with months ago. Otherwise, o major leaks or issues in the drivetrain.

The exhaust was all factory when I got the car, ut the muffler and tail-pipe were rusted and blown out, o I installed a new DynaMax Bullet muffler in the middle, nd welded on a Borla 40641 XR1 Stainless Steel tail-pipe. I’m a stickler when it comes to exhaust look, oise, nd tones, o I spend a lot of time with different options before I arrived at this set-up. It’s not too loud or droning at any RPM, oesn’t sound like a Ricer, nd looks like a factory piece. If I had to describe the sound, ’d compare it to a Jaguar E-Type from the 1960’s: strong, ntense, aspy, nd easily identifiable as a carbureted inline 6 cylinder. The entire exhaust was just removed last week to be checked for leaks and painted with a ceramic high-heat coating to prevent rust or other corrosion.

The car is incredibly solid and I’ve had all the carpets out at one point in the past, nd I’ve not seen a single spot of rust or repair. There are a couple area in the lower quarters where there are bubbles in the paint, ut this is more than likely due to improper paint prep when it was resprayed.

The new paint was applied around 2000 and is a single-stage Silver Metal Flake, t is much more shimmery than stock; while not perfect, t is a very presentable 10-footer paint-job. There are areas where you can see and feel differences in the finish, hese would all be remedied by a repaint. Being a daily driver, t has gotten it’s share of small chips and scratches, reas around the hood and doors are most effected by this, ut overall it is clean, nd impressive!

The interior has been very well maintained, he original was cracking before I got it, o it had a very high-quality dash cap installed. The seats are very comfortable and have zero rips, ears, r stains. I’ve installed a pair of 3-point seat belts from Motorsport Auto, nd they work very well, ut I do have the original lap-belts as well. The original Datsun steering wheel was in excellent shape with no discoloration or damage, nd to avoid wearing it out or effecting the condition, decided to replace it with a Black Mahogany Steering Wheel from Motorsport Auto, ot only does it look good, ut it also stronger and thicker which helps control the car better. I can include the original wheel if the buyer and I come to and agreement.

All the gauges work with the exception of the clock. With the aforementioned alternator swap, he amperage output is very strong and reflects that on the gauge. The tach is the factory 240Z unit and works fine under normal conditions, ut if you rev the car close to the redline, t will jump around a bit which is typical on these cars and many owners swap out a later 280Z head unit. The gas gauge reads Full when the tank is Full, ut reads Empty when you still have ½ tank remaining; I never got around to fixing this since I would just pre-emptively stop for gas more often.

Since this was originally an automatic car, t had the different console in it; when I changed transmissions I had a hard time finding a good manual 240Z console so I left the old automatic console in place. I fabricated a custom shift boot and cover and capped it all off with a red 280Z shift knob to match the rest of the interior.

The car already had an aftermarket radio installed when I got it, ut it was pumping out sound through two home A/V speakers in the back, nd was not sounding well; so I purchased a Rear Speaker box kit from TheZStore.com and installed it and ran new wires to the radio. Very clean install and easily reversible if someone were inclined to go back to original. Rear carpet is old, ossibly original, nd faded, ould be replaced but is tear-free and not badly stained or ratty.

Overall, his is a car that I’ve driven over 10,000 miles in the past 7 years. It’s had various upgrades and improvements that were all done for the sake of safety, ower, nd handling. If you’re looking for a 240Z that you can hop in at anytime and hit the road, hen this is the car for you!

You can probably tell by the length and density of the listing that I’m very passionate about this car, nd if the situation were different, would keep this car forever, ut other projects and commitments have arisen that take precedence.

Car has a clean Texas Title in my name and is available for inspections or viewing anytime here in Lubbock, exas.
