Fiat Abarth Double Bubble Zagato
A Project Car to Make Your Own!

We are offering a project Abarth Zagato for sale. Fiat chassis # 100-526879. Original engine (no longer with car) was #574827. The car is titled as a 1960 as may have been first sold then. This appears to be late 1958 Zagato production model as indicated by the smaller Lucas tail lights and VIN sequence. We rescued this handcrafted Fiat Abarth Double Bubble Zagato from the land of potatoes and cows. Yes the other end of Idaho. Since only 4-600 of these hand built alloy bodied beauties were built and possibly 250-300 survived, e hooked up the trailer and had a lovely drive. The only history we got for this car was dad bought this house and the Abarth was in the corner of the garage and became part of the house deal. He gave the car to his son for a wedding present. Imagine the son's new wife writing thank you note: "We love the gift of our first non-running car that takes up 1/3 of garage. Thank you Dad for the wonderful gift, ven though nothing Zagato was on our wedding registration, e love it. It is so much prettier than a new rectangular washer and dryer. No I won't mind parking my car out in the snow for the next 10 years so we can keep this warm and dry." I wrote bank check to Dad, nd I think the car appreciated more than the house. That garage storage accounts for the last 15 years of history. Prior to that the history is unknown at this time. By all appearances this Zagato has been dormant since the late 60's or early 70's, ince it has a Fiat 850 tach and seats installed. Well not installed, ince seats are not even bolted in. Of course the Abarth tuned 750 motor did not come with the car, aving been replaced decades ago with Fiat 600 standard fare. The garage nor the current owners could tell us what happened to the original engine, eats, nterior, iny bumperettes, xterior door handles or badges. We don’t know if it was a race car at one point, r was stripped to be repaired and parts got lost over decades. What we do know:

Mechanicals:

We pulled the oil pan and saw from the bottom to be new pistons and fresh looking internals. We cleaned the carb, rimed for oil pressure and ran an electric pump from our auxiliary gas can, nd started it up. The engine runs quietly and smoothly. We ran it about 15 minutes with no issues. Compression was even at 95-100 per cylinder. We would recommend a tear-down and inspection of this very simple engine due to age. We could not drive or road test transmission since the brakes are bad from sitting. The car appears to still have the original longer Abarth only radiator and special air flap intake.

Body:

When we acquired the car it was coated in a thick covering of black primer. We sanded through it to determine where and how much filler was in the car. It appears the body was powder blue as original. The rear two thirds of the car, indshield back are actually very good considering the age and type of construction. It has minor dents and creases, ut no severe accident damage. The classic Double Bubble roof is good and not hiding the typical damage that resulted from instant rollover when the rear hub breaks when racing. The very hard to find glass is all present, ncluding the front side glass which is usually stripped from race cars and lost. The rear side glass quarter glass is now fixed, ot hinged as original. The windshield is still glass, as a chip, ut we will supply a new glass from a batch of 10 that we had made from the original pattern for $750 to the buyer of the car. The front body has suffered a typical front impact as it doesn’t take much force to distort those delicate alloy panels. This car weighs 1,245 pounds so impact no matter how slight the contact, he Abarth gets its classic Roman good looks rearranged. This one is now missing the grill protrusion and the metal has that look of aluminum foil that has been crumbled and straightened. There are tears that have been welded long time ago. This nose had areas that were filled with approximately one half inch of filler mostly at the center of nose and front area of the head light covers. The hood is loose as one hinge is missing and the support on body has deteriorated. The chassis structures have suffered no issues, ut the nose needs a real craftsman to reconstruct the missing grill raised area and shape. There is electrolysis mostly in the perimeter of the floors at the sills, ausing a gap of one inch, ven though center of floors are intact. There is also missing metal where the nose meets the trunk floor where spare would be stowed. The rest of the body has just minor other spots. The car does not appear to have been exposed to salt, o upper panels, indow and opening surrounds are fairly good. From the cowl back there are dents and creases but no excess amounts of filler.

Conclusion:

If you have body skills, riends who do, r a cousin in Poland, his car could be beautiful again. This would be best to build into a vintage race car, r outlaw style street car, s it is much too expensive to acquire the original components to restore. The car was originally hand built and most missing parts could be fabricated. It is a rare item priced at its base value. Since most all of these cars lost their Abarth prepped original engines either due to wear or the racing displacement change that eliminated the 750cc class in 1959, inding a different engine installed is not rare in this model. This will be like adopting a dog from the pound. Pure bred blood lines unmistakable, istory unknown, ill always be a bit of a mutt, ut could turn into your favorite companion. Note: the car came with a clear Idaho title that corresponds to the original engine number stamped on factory original fitted plate, ot the chassis number. Typical error in this time period. Again the original engine block is gone, ut original body tag is still fitted. Engine currently fitted is 100.000 594422.
