Description

A tribute to the streets of Mayberry, North Carolina, now featured in our Milwaukee Showroom is a 1967 Ford Custom 500 Mayberry Squad Car. The Andy Griffith Show ran for eight seasons from October 3, 1960 to April 1, 1968 for a total of 249 half-hour episodes. Each year, Ford provided a new vehicle for the squad car with each year slightly different than the year before it. Changes included different sized seals, the number of spotlights, the type of antenna, and a few other minor tweaks. While this vehicle was not in the show, it would look right at home with Sheriff Taylor, Barney Fife, Aunt Bee, and Opie.

Andy Griffith played the role of Sheriff Taylor in a Lincolnesque style; he was the one who solved the problems of those around him in Mayberry, never failing to be the voice of reason. This squad car gives off the same feel, as it was well-maintained and upgraded in a reasonable and professional manner. In 2009, it was stripped to metal, the minimal rust was repaired, and the vehicle was repainted. At the same time, it received a new exhaust, drums and pads, tires, shocks, and a general tune-up. About 3,000 miles after the repaint, the engine was replaced with a rebuilt 289 CID V8, the same as originally in the vehicle, and a new ignition system.

This vehicle is more than just a fun to look at. Equipped with power steering and Vintage Air, driving this squad car is even more comfortable than it would have been for Sheriff Taylor. With the maintenance work and new air conditioning, this is the perfect car to take to Mayberry Days, the annual festival celebrating the show in Andy Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina, or anywhere else with Gomers or Goobers that need some Griffith-esque guidance.
