Description

If you're a fan of keeping a low profile and not showing off what's under the hood, this stealthy 1960 Ford Galaxie will surely appeal to you. We love the low-key look, especially the blackwall tires, but with a thundering 460 under the hood, it's anything but a shrinking wallflower on the street. Walk softly and carry a big stick indeed! The paint is a little creamier than familiar Wimbledon White, but that's OK because the subtle look on this Galaxie 2-door sedan is exactly the right choice. Following the flamboyance of the 1950s, the 1960 Galaxie looks reserved and clean, and the simple front end is especially attractive. There are vestiges of tailfins out back and just enough chrome to make things interesting. The paint was done some time ago, so it's not perfect, but then again, perfect paint is always a dead giveaway on any sleeper. No, what you want is a car just like this that looks like it has led an easy life but isn't a trailer queen. The doors fit well, the massive quarters are nice and straight, and it doesn't appear to have ever been wrecked or rusty so the base stock underneath is pretty darned good. A few touch-ups here and there suggest that someone cared about keeping this car in shape and we have to admit that the chrome really shines up nicely. And yes, for those of you wondering, those are indeed hood pins in the center of the hood and no, we don't know who put them there. The aqua interior is a nice contrast to the off-white bodywork and is a purely period look that we love. We're guessing that the upholstery is original and it's showing its age with a few splits on the driver's seat. On the other hand, the door panels, carpets, and dash are in very good shape and the headliner is still taut and firmly affixed to the roof. The instrument panel puts all the needles behind a single pane of Plexiglas with secondary knobs just below. And for industrial design purposes, there's nothing cooler than the exposed linkages on the steering column, which give the inside of the Galaxie an industrial-strength look. Remarkably, everything works, including all the gauges, lights, and even the original AM radio which fits neatly in an oval-shaped hole in the middle of the dash. Back seat room is impressive and the trunk is massive enough to carry everything you own, even with a full-sized spare back there. The 460 cubic inch V8 isn't original, of course, but it recalls the wonderful V8 monsters that Ford was building at the time. Endless reserves of torque fling the relatively lightweight Galaxie down the road and the installation is quite tidy, giving it a very OEM look. The bright Ford Blue paint certainly helps and the engine has been dressed much like the factory would have done it, so anyone who's not an expert might think it came that way from Ford. Upgrade like power front disc brakes and a C6 3-speed automatic transmission ensure that it's safe and easy to drive even with the horsepower injection, and the rumbling Flowmaster dual exhaust system gives it a bit of an edge to contrast with the low-key look. It's quite tidy underneath, so no worries about the horsepower twisting a rusty frame and those 235/75/15 blackwall tires on painted wheels with dog dish hubcaps are the perfect choice on a car like this.Purely built for fun, this is a very affordable and unusual car that packs a big surprise.
