Up for auction is a classic 1970 Ford Mustang Fastback (sport roof) in very good condition for its age. She is a real eye catcher! I purchased it about 6 years ago with plans to make it my daily driver, just with a lot more style. As time passed and my relationship status changed, nbsp;it sat in my garage unused. Now I have a wife, 3 kids, 2 dogs and no free time to either finish it as I wanted to or enjoy it as it is.
6 years ago when I purchased it in Seattle, nbsp;I had a lot of work done before it was even shipped to me. The gas tank and fuel system was either repaired or replaced as needed. The underside, trunk and engine compartment were blasted and powder coated. The rear end was rebuilt. The engine and transmission were completely gone though and repaired as needed and a new Holly 4 barrel carb was installed. The brakes are still drums all the way around but have been upgraded with new, racing shoes. The drive shaft has even been pulled and straightened. Basically, the car was gone though section by section to ensure it was safe and reliable as a daily driver.
Once home here in Las Vegas, nbsp;it got a nice new paint job about 3 years ago. As you can see from the pictures, it looks great! It also was upgraded with a loud, aggressive new dual exhaust system with chrome tips. Here is a section by section description of the car:
Exterior- Beautiful with no rust and a great new red paint job with a flat black strip down the hood and flat black around the tail lights. The only thing wrong with the body is that the rear running light panel is loose and needs to be better secured.
Interior- Overall in good condition as further explained below:
The driver's side seat vinyl covering is torn at the seams. It will either need to be repaired or replace.
The passenger seat as well as the back seats are in great condition with no damage and really no wear to speak of.
The door panels are complete and in good condition. The drivers side has a very small tear where you put your hand in to open/close the door. There is moderate ware on the top portions of both panels however and you would likely want to at least have them painted. The back panels are the same. Not damaged but worn from the last 45 years and in need of a little paint.
The carpet is great. Bright red without any tears or serious stains.
The headliner is also great with no damage.
The seatbelts work correctly.
The instrument panel gauges all work correctly.
The dash cover is nice but cracked around the speaker opening and there is a small crack also in the area above the steering wheel.
The center area where the radio and heater/AC controls are is nice. The stereo is brand new and designed to look vintage. It has an electric tuner and an AUX input for your MP3 player. Please note that the stereo is not installed. I just put it in to show you how it would look. There are 2 trim pieces missing from either side of this center area though. They can be found on eBay and aren't expensive. The heater/AC control unit and all the vents work but the directional pieces in the vents have become brittle with age. Some have broke completely and will need to be replaced.
Engine- It is a 302 V8. It runs very strong and sounds great. The carb was last set (jetted) in Seattle at sea level though. Las Vegas is 2400 feet above sea level. It runs a little rich and could use some tuning. When you stomp on the gas, it lags a bit. Nothing a quick adjustment by a qualified mechanic couldn't correct though.
Mileage- The odometer reads 12k mile. I would assume that means 112k but there is no way to be sure with a car of this age.
Transmission- No problems. It shifts smooth and tight. The shifter is worn out and sucks however. I have a nice OEM replacement that will come with the car though. You just need to put it in.
Undercarriage and suspension- A lifetime west coast car with no rust. Undercarriage has been powder coated and protected. Suspension is in great condition. This car drives straight and smooth.
Electrical / lighting- Headlights work great. Dash and instrument lights work great. Cabin lights are not installed but I have them. One of the tail lights is out as well as the flasher for the turn signals. The switch that turns on the cabin lights when the driver's side door is opened is missing. The passenger door switch is there and works.
Windows- All original as far as I can tell. Windshield has a couple of small chip that should be filled. Driver's and passenger's windows work correctly. Rear wing windows work correctly as well but the latches locking them closed needs some repair.
Trunk- The trunk is fine and opens, closes, and locks as it should. The whole compartment has been powder coated but still needs new carpet and new rubber seals.
Wheels/Tires- Awesome Centerline 15" rims with almost new BF Goodrich Comp T/A tires.
Brakes- Drum brakes all the way around with new high performance shoes. The car stops as it should.
Stereo- Nice, new head unit specially designed for this model Mustang to look vintage but sound modern with a digital tuner and AUX input. The back is cut for two 6x9 rear speakers. The front was originally designed for one 5x7 speaker but I bought these cool, new kick panels for both left and right that replace the existing panels and allow you to put in two speakers for a stereo set up. You will just need to put them in. There are currently no speakers though.
A/C- This is an original A/C car. As I said above, the control works as it should. The A/C system however is missing some pieces. The evaporator/heater box is still behind the dash but the engine compartment stuff (condenser, etc...) is gone. You can either fill in the blanks or buy an aftermarket system. The heater works great.
Horn- Electricity is going to the horn but the horn itself no longer works and will need to be replaced.
Spare parts/pieces- Not installed but including are the following: Replacement OEM Shifter, new wiper arms and blades, stereo kick plate replacements, new sun visors with all attachments, OEM used cabin lights, new custom stereo with vintage look, custom black Mustang floor mates in great condition.
Phew, I think that's it! I'm a big believer in karma and have done my best to describe both the pros and cons of the beautiful car. I hope it helps you make your decision. I've purchased both cars and motorcycles on eBay before and realize that detailed descriptions and honest evaluations are rare. In my opinion, you will fall in love with this car. I think that a future investment of $1000 without A/C or $2500 with A/C will make this your dream daily driver/weekend show car. Good luck and happy bidding!
