Happy "eBaying"! Paul R. Wankle Pres. Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton CA 925-846-1451 OVERVIEW-THIS PARTICULAR 1965 MUSTANG FASTBACK This black plate California car was assembled in the San Jose plant and has spent its entire life here in Northern California all but the first 2 years with the most recent owner. Within the previous 1000 miles it was mechanically upgraded and cosmetically restored at considerable cost. It now has the sharp stock appearance of a '65 Mustang 2+2 Fastback with much of the GT option package added but is a mechanical "sleeper" due to the professionally "built" Windsor 351 engine. Major features of the car include: - "Built" 351 cu. in. Windsor V8 w/ aluminum heads and intake manifold - Roller rocker arms - Competition headers - Competition oiling system - MSD ignition - 4-barrel carburetor - All new dual exhaust system - Recently professionally rebuilt original Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed transmission - New Posi-traction 3.00:1 ratio rear end - New front and rear suspension - New front and rear shocks - New conversion to four wheel disc brakes - Power steering w/ original proper steering wheel - New front tires good rear tire tread all raised white letters - 5-spoke wheels (Period installed in the late 1960's) - New fuel tank and sending unit - Proper Poppy Red paint on a very straight rust free body & straight frame - Excellent chrome and stainless trim - Many GT option package items added - All new black interior showing no wear whatsoever - Modern analog 6-gauge set in dash - Modern reproduction '66 Mustang AM/FM radio (new) w/ 4 speakers - Lo Jack system installed - New car cover - Shop manuals - Extensive file of invoices receipts and equipment information (refer to photos) DETAILS-THIS PARTICULAR 1965 MUSTANG FASTBACK This Mustang was assembled in the San Jose (Milpitas) CA plant on September 25 1964 and has spent its entire life in California. In fact this is a difficult to find and desirable fastback that has been cared for by the most recent owner since 1967. Well in excess of $15000.00 was invested just during the 2006-2007 time period to improve the car mechanically and cosmetically. The Mustang 2+2 has been driven only about 250 miles since it was built as a result of "realities" of its elderly owner. However the car was properly stored inside and recently been "freshened up" to make it a usable drivable car. The fastback has excellent "bones" and represents an excellent blend between totally stock and nicely upgraded and there are still a few remaining items to complete making it the perfect choice for a buyer who enjoys a certain amount of tinkering! Although not originally a GT option car many of the GT features have been added. It can now be shown used for cruises and enjoyed to the fullest and with the "built" 351 Windsor V8. Given the cars mechanical features it will not only perform vintage Mustangs but more current muscle cars as well. THE NUMBERS The data plate on the rear of the driver's door shows the following: - BODY 63A=2+2 Fastback - COLOR 3=Poppy Red - TRIM 26=Black vinyl - DATE 25J=25th of September 1964 (second month of 65 model year assembly) - DSO 71=Dealer special order - AXLE 6 (Upgraded) - TRANS 6=Cruise-O-Matic (With rebuild and shift kit) The Vehicle Warranty Number or VIN is 5R09C140794 decoded as follows: - 5 = 1965 model year - R = Assembly plant San Jose CA - 09 = Body code for fastback - C = Engine 289 cu. in 200 hp 2 barrel carb V8 (replaced) - 140794 = Production sequence (starts at 100001) Note: The 40794th car produced making it a relatively early 1965. MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENTS Receipts are provided for more than $12000.00 of mechanical improvements and cosmetic restoration in 2006-2007 and this does not include the owner's labor or the body and paint work. Although not originally a GT option car several features of this option have been added including the following: - Twin grille-mounted fog lamps - 4-wheel disk brakes - Dual exhausts exiting through the rear valence - Analog 6-gauge set - Rocker molding trim. The bulk of the expense was in the "built" 351 Windsor engine and accessories. The car has been driven fewer than 500 miles since 2007. Major items are as follows: - $7900 on the "built" 351 Windsor engine including $3059 of machine shop costs (see mechanical section below for equipment details) - $1141 to rebuild the original Cruise-O-Matic transmission - New Posi-traction rear end - $2320 to re-chrome trim and polish stainless - Complete interior restoration - New instrumentation and radio/speakers - Body and paint work - New 4-wheel disc brake system - New master cylinder and lines - New dual exhaust system - New fuel tank sending unit pump and lines - New suspension system front and rear - New radiator water pump heater core and hoses - New wiring harnesses - New front tires (April 2015) MECHANICAL - "Built" 351 cu. in. The paint coverage is very good and there are very few even minor chips. However there are a few minor runs solvent "pops" and a slight shade mismatch between doors and front fenders (the Mustang has not received a final polish/color sanding since being professionally painted). The restoration photos support that the car was properly prepared for painting by removing all glass chrome and stainless and even the front fenders. However in some lights certain panels appear to have taken on a slightly different shade perhaps as a result of being painted off of the car. However the Mustang did receive a "complete" re-spray including under hood trunk door jambs and all body panels. The body is really straight and the door bottoms and rocker panels are extremely solid. There is no evidence of rust "hot spots" under the paint. Chrome bumpers and other components have been professionally re-plated or replaced and the stainless is polished. All glass is excellent. The black interior is restored nearly as new and is quite spectacular. Everything is so new that no wear is evident anywhere. The dash is totally free from cracks; the aftermarket gauges have the appearance of originals and are quite subtle. The radio is a high quality AM/FM aftermarket that fits in the original opening. The radio plays through a front speaker but rear speakers are mounted as are front door speaker grills awaiting speakers/wiring. There is wiring run to the trunk that appears to be for a CD changer or amplifier. Carpet is excellent as is the entire rear cargo and seating area. The engine compartment is clean and tidy. The underside of the hood is painted Poppy Red while the firewall and inside fender liners are black. The underside of the car is also like new with many of the new components visible; new gas tank new exhaust pipes and mufflers new shocks new front suspension new rear leaf springs etc. Photographs show the amazing rust and solid floor pans trunk suspension and other underside parts. There is absolutely no evidence of any replacement of major panels either on the cars undercarriage or "top side." When the original gauge cluster (provided) was removed in 2006 the odometer read 48197. The new TPI odometer now reads 50 miles. It is possible that approximately 50K is an actual mileage. However it cannot be proven and as such the car is termed total mileage unknown (TMU). WHAT DOES THE MUSTANG NEED? We are often asked "What does she need." While the Mustang has received considerable upgrades/improvements and has solid "Bones" (as they say in Real Estate) as with most collector cars there are a few "opportunity areas" that will provide the cars new owner to "tinker" with the Fastback and add their personal touches. As they say in real estate circles "This car has excellent "Bones." Extensive mechanical and cosmetic work has been completed at considerable expense on a totally rust free straight original "Black Plate" California Mustang. However while the car recently received quite a bit of work and it runs great there are several things that would bring the Mustang to a higher level. They include: - Radio plays through a center speaker but the front side door speakers just have grills (no speakers). However wiring is run but there are no speakers in place (we will include a set of speakers) NOTE: Some photos show the car without an antenna but one has since been installed. The radio works fine. - The tachometer does not work and no effort has been made to determine the reason why. The other gauges are fully functional and the car has excellent oil pressure (60+ lbs.) runs very cool (due to cooling upgrades) has a fully functional charging system and working speedometer / odometer. - The fog lights are not wired in. Included is a new interior fog light switch. - When the car was painted it was disassembled including fenders removed glass out and all trim removed. Since it was completed several years ago the car was garaged and never final polished and color sanded. While the car received mostly new trim and emblems it would benefit from overall clean-up to address paint imperfections including minor runs dirt in the paint etc. - From lack of use the suspension has a few squeaks and "groans." However the inspection of the car reveals all new front and rear disc brakes and virtually new suspension components. So lubrication/adjustments may be in order. OTHER - Clear California title with current California registration - Original California black plate car # PAJ 322 (Front & rear plates will go to California buyers but need to be turned if the car is sold out of state / country). - California smog test not required for vehicles 1975 and older - Passed the California required safety inspection for working wipers turn signals lights brakes etc. - Literature included - Large notebook of invoices receipts and equipment literature SPECIFICATIONS OF THE 1965 MUSTANG FASTBACK - Wheelbase 108 inches - Length 181.6 inches - Width 68.2 inches - Height 51.2 inches - Curb weight 2606 lbs - Fuel capacity 16 gallons HISTORY OF THE 1965 FORD MUSTANG The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company from April 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang's styling with its long hood and short deck proved wildly popular and inspired a host of imitators. Lee Iacocca's assistant general manager and chief engineer Donald Frey was the head engineer for the Mustang project - supervising the development of the Mustang in a record 18 months from September 1962 to March 1964 - while Iacocca himself championed the project as Ford Division general manager. It was initially introduced in 1964 as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale the following year. The fastback design was done totally in secret. Even Iacocca did not see it until finished and he proclaimed "We've got to do it!" This body style would eventually become the Shelby GT350. At the time of its introduction the Mustang was slotted into a compact car segment. To decrease development costs the Mustang used chassis suspension and drive-train components derived from the Ford Falcon and Fairlane. Since it was introduced five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year and manufactured alongside 1964 Ford Falcons and 1964 Mercury Comets the earliest Mustangs are widely referred to as the 1964½ model but are registered as 1965's. Several changes to the Mustang occurred at the start of the normal 1965 model year production five months after its introduction. These cars are known as "late 65's" and were built after factory retooling in August 1964. The DC electrical generator was replaced by a new AC alternator on all Fords. The Mustang GT version was introduced as the "GT Equipment Package" and included a V8 engine (mostly 289 cu. in.) grille-mounted fog lamps rocker panel stripes and disc brakes. In the interior the GT option added a different instrument panel that included a speedometer fuel gauge temp gauge oil pressure gauge and ammeter in five round dials (without numbers). Total 1965 production was 559451 (681551 including 1964½). PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background for any collector car being sold over the Internet. Also ownership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles these cars require regular ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge patience and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said collector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! - The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but in some instances has been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering.
