This grandma-owned Mustang is VERY CLEAN, ND VERY RARE. We've owned it for 20,000 miles/6 years. The car is parked in the garage more than it should be, nd it's time to move it on to someone that can love it more than we can. The convertible top was replaced with a new top in May of this year (2015). It is in perfect condition. All tires have been replaced within the past 10,000 miles.
This McLaren is LOADED with the Limited Edition ASC McLaren Badge #1106. This car WILL make people talk.
This limited production two-seater convertible is a Mustang-lover's dream. The paint is unique, he interior is unique, he dash is numbered, nd the styling is as good as it gets on a late-80s Foxbody. This car was $30,000 new in 1988, nd very few are left in existence today. In a world where so many Mustangs look the same, ou'll never hear those words when describing this McLaren. This is not the type of machine to be placed in the hands of a terminally shy individual. When driving on the interstate, e prepared to slow traffic somewhat as everyone has a look. And don't be surprised when Mustang enthusiasts don't quite understand why this one looks so much better than what they're used to. Or how many times it will get compared to a Mercedes. Or questions regarding whether this was a limited prototype that never made production.
ACS McLaren Mustangs received their finishing touches in Livonia, I. They started with a fully optioned LX sedan fitted with a GT front clip, T exhausts, nd deleted rear and window trim. As work would begin on these McLarens, he interior would be stripped and fitted in a choice of gray (this one), lue, an or red leather. The steering wheel and shifter knob also received leather coverings. The stock exterior paint was hand-sanded down to the primer and the top of the car was cut away. With the windshield glass in place, nd using a special press, he entire front glass and frame were laid back an additional 10 degrees and reinforced. The McLaren was also equipped with 1" lowering sport springs. Add these two things together and we can see an amazing swept aerodynamic look that can't be obtained by any other Mustang.
Meanwhile, he undercarriage, irewall, ear shock towers and other areas were braced and stiffened. The special convertible cover was fitted to the body as well as ground effects. Tail lamp graphics and eurostyle rear spoiler were added only after the sheet metal was gone over to remove the slightest factory imperfections. Then, ach McLaren received a special Sikkens paint (used on Porsche, otus, nd Rolls Royce). This procedure included two coats of primer, hree color coats of urethane enamel, nd two clear coats of urethane enamel; all being hand-sanded between applications.
This McLaren includes original BBS wheels, he black convertible top option, he optional automatic transmission, nd 327 gearing.
The ASC plant in Livonia also did the GM convertible work for Corvette, nd their plant in Germany turned out Porsche 944 convertibles during the same time period.
"Back on the road again, he McLaren handled nicely with little body flex or wind noise common to the convertible. The 5.0 liter GT engine without modification poured out powerreminiscentof Boss 302's but more usable for street situations. As I slowly pulled back into the parking lot the next day and surrendered the keys, was thinking that maybe I could work another part-time job and afford yet another pony in my garage." Mike Worthy
Only 2,278 McLarens were built over a 6 year timespan, nd this low production amount is the main reason that the ASC/McLaren is nearly unknown, eing over shadowed by the rubber burning Saleens. There aren't too many opportunities to obtain one of these machines, nd the price is still right before, ike all limited-edition Mustangs, he value of these machines skyrockets.
A few items that need attention:
It seems the 1988 McLarens likely all came with an automatic remote lock - it did not come with this when we purchased the vehicle in Texas in 2009.
The passenger door armrest is loose and will need to be screwed back in. The switches for the window and the lock work perfectly.
The driver's seat has a small gray permanent patch two cover a quarter size hole.
There is a small hairline crack in the back bumper.
There is a small amount of paint gone on the front bumper corner where we rubbed up against something in the garage, nd the paint was taken down to the primer. About 4" by 4" of issue there.
Cruise control is not currently working.
Good luck, nd good bidding!
