1993 Ford Mustang Cobra Clone fully restored to better than new condition.
The final and last year for the fox body mustangs.
This car started out life as 2.3liter automatic Mustang LX once I got the car home I proceed to strip it down to nothing but a bare shell. Every part was remove and evaluated for either restoration or replacement. The chassis shell was installed on a rotisserie and sent out for blasting. Once back from blasting and rust spots were cut out and repaired with steel. The front radiator support was replaced as well as the section where the battery sits. Steeda full length sub frame connectors where than welded into place as well as fully welding all the seams in each torque box. Since this was a four cylinder car there was no damage to the torque boxes. All critical suspension pick up points were also reinforced and fully welded for added strength. Moving up to the front of the car all spot welded seams were fully welded for strength. A weak point with all fox body mustangs are the strut towers flexing epically with coil over struts. So all spot welds inside the strut towers were welded and reinforced. I used roughly 10lbs of welding wire to build this car the right way. So after all the welding was complete the car was sent off to the body shop for paint.
At the body shop the car had an epoxy primer sprayed on the entire car that means the undercarriage was also epoxy primed. Any dents and holes were either pulled or welded no plastic body filler was used. Before painting a rust preventer was applied to the inside of all the frame rails and anything not able to be painted. When most people restore or repaint a car, hey usually don't treat the under carriage with much attention. Not this car the entire under side is epoxy premiered and base coat clear coated to match the rest of the car. The color chosen was Ford Moonlight Blue Metallic with a little extra metallic mixed in. Since the whole car was stripped clean all the door jams and window channels were painted just like new. We also removed the antenna location on the fender and weld it closed. A powered antenna was installed under the dashboard.
Since I was going for a Cobra Clone I went with the best kit on the market which was the Cervini's kit. I also went with their 2" cowl fiberglass hood. All fiberglass components was prepared correctly I had them baked in an oven prior to paint to make sure jell coat was sent so I would have no cracks in the paint in the summer heat.
The trouble some hood prop rod was replaced with nice gas struts to support the hood. The front bumper cover is new OEM and I was able to locate a brand new in the box 1993 OEM headlight header panel from Florida. No aftermarket crap which does not fit properly. For installing the cobra grille I fabricated a fiberglass retainer just like the original one to hold it in place. That means no double sided tape to hold it in place. All the headlights and fog lights are replaced with brand new clear lights and amber turn signals and all light bulbs are brand also. Moving forward all the body moldings were replaced with OEM Ford and painted off the car in fact all body parts were painted off the car. Fenders are original since they were in great shape as well as the doors, ll original. The hatch was replaced due to rust on the underside where the lock was. I was also able to keep the front inner fender wells installed on the front of the car. This was not easy to do since the front and rear wheel are the same size so all the fenders were rolled for tire clearance before paint.
The car got a brand new windshield and hatch window as well as brand new side quarter windows. All window trim was either restored or replaced as well as the cowl is new and the side mirrors are restored. Both mirrors are power mirrors. The door/hatch locks are brand new as well as the ignition cylinder is also brand new all keys match. Also, eplaced were the door handles with new metal ones not cheap plastic ones. New power lock actuators were installed as well as a keyless entry system. The car does not have an alarm to much trouble if something goes wrong with them. Also installed all new weather stripping and door seals. For the rear section of the car I spent a lot of time to make sure that the rear cobra bumper cover was straight and in line with the taillights which were restore to new condition. Inside the rear wheels bed liner was used to seal and protect that area. It also makes for good sound absorption and road noise isolation. Bed liner was used thru out the car in places that needed protection from either the road or jacking the car up.
The entire inside of the car was full and painstaking restored. I started with installing dynamat everywhere inside the car. The roof is also coated with dynamat and then I installed two layers of insulation. There is no tin can sound anymore if you get stuck in the rain. The carpet was replaced with the deluxe style with the extra insulation on the underside. For the doors new deluxe door panels were installed along with dynamat. This is the quietest mustang interior you will find in a 1993 mustang. All the plastic interior panels were restored/refinished using OEM primer and paint. The dash, enter console, nd rear plastic panels were all redone. I installed a headliner which was plastic backed not cardboard back so it will not droup. The heater box was dissembled and restored completely along with a new heater core. The car is set for AC but I did not install it but wish I had. All the wiring and components are still in the car less the condenser on the front. The instrument cluster was updated with the 140mph speedometer I looked for a new one but could not find one. The mileage on the speedo does not reflect the actual miles on the car. All new light bulbs were installed in dash. The stereo is a pioneer unit it has Bluetooth and hands free calling. It also has CD player and uses the premium sound system ford installed. That being said the Ford amp was used and all new Sound Ordnance speakers were installed six total in the stock locations. This is a stock style sound system no huge subwoofer and amps. I even made sure lights in the stereo matched the rest of the car in green. Some updates were installed as I said before keyless entry and Bluetooth are installed. Also a Homelink auto dimming mirror as well as heated front seats. The seats in the car are Corbeau racing seats which are very comfortable and they recline. To complete the seating in the car the rear seat covers were replaced with matching ones from Corbeau. The seat belts are also new and in black to match the seats. There are new floor mats for the front and rear to protect the new carpet. A new deluxe rear cargo carpet, long with dynamat installed to finish the rear hatch section.
This car has a very special suspension system it is a cross between a road race and street car setup. I have been racing and building mustang for road racing since 1990. I've raced NASA, MRA and PDA and have always been very completive. Since all of the suspension components are race proven I changed out the Delrina and Poly bushings for a high performance rubber bushing. The rear suspension includes a pan hard bar and a torque arm along with weight jacker control arms. This rear suspension was adopted by ford for the 5th gen mustang. The front has a custom modified K-member with all the proper correction to make the mustang handle. There are custom made front tubular lower control arms which allow me to run 265 tires all around. This car is capable of running with Porsches and Viper's on a road race track and just as happy driving to a car show. The car is NOT harsh or bouncy it is one of the nicest riding fox body mustangs I ever been in. This car was a two year project all parts of this car have be touched so as to make the car as perfect as possible.
My main goal was to create mustang that gives modern day super car handling and ride quality wrapped in a 1993 Mustang. I always dreamed of a mustang like this and I finally created one only better than I had hoped...Don’t just get a car cause it has been detailed and looks shiny and pretty get one that has been pain staking built and updated to modern day performance, ot just a shiny engine compartment and wheels
