Description

1972 Bobtail Range Rover 200 TDI Off and on-roader.

This Bobtail Range Rover has had a LOT of work done to it and even has been the subject of a Land Rover World Article.

It was 100 inch wheelbase two door. California born and raised, o no rust.It used to be orange and now is Land Rover Bronze Green.

The rear overhang was removed and the back shortened 13 inches.

The wheel-base was shortened by 9 inches to 91 inches which is pretty much exactly what a Defender is.

It was shortened across the floor in the back behind the front seats. This new shortness was determined by fitting the shorter four door models doors in the place of the longer two door model’s doors. The chassis, ody, ear fenders and roof were all shortened in strategic places by 9 inches and it all fitted back together.

The engine is a 200 TDI and is exempt from smog because it is a 1972. It has two batteries, huge intercooler and the boost pressure is turned up a bit to compensate for the bigger intercooler. The gearbox is a 5 speed from this same engine all of which came out of a Discovery. Interestingly and by coincidence, oth driveshafts are the same length, o you only need carry one spare. The differential covers are quarter inch thick sewer pipe caps that can nudge rocks out of the way and never dent in onto the huge Toyota ring gear. Poly bushes everywhere.

The axles are huge thick 30 Spline silicone chrome steel that just fit through the Longfield lifetime CV Joints. The rear is a Cooper custom set of huge axles of varying thickness to compensate for the different lengths. The differentials are both new Toyota E-Lockers and the front is a hypoid sliding drive high mount to allow better steering gear clearance. Everything is stronger and better. Nothing breaks under there. It is VERY Reliable indeed. It will run on Veggie oil if you want too.

The wheels are a slightly different offset and are wider too. The tires are 35 inch, y 250, y 15 inch wheels. They have a lot of tread on them, lmost new in condition. There is a spare too. The front axle is corrected for caster and camber. Front and rear aluminium skid plates. The front is a little dented. You can take it off and straighten it and bolt it right back on.

This Range Rover has maintained it’s Range Roverness in that it still has airconditioning, walnut dashboard, CD Player and electric windows. So once you are off the trail, ou shift out of low range and center differential and drive off at highway speeds without even getting out. This means that you can actually drive through a trail like the Rubicon and go home on the freeway without having to go back for a trailer. I have driven it on the freeways all the way to Moab in Utah from California at 70 MPH. On the road it does 29 Miles per gallon. Off road the temp hardly warms up and it runs for two days on a tank. It is very economical on Diesel.

The rear bumper is custom made from a quarter inch half pipe and is deliberately made to look like a Range Rover rear bumper, ust 100 times stronger. It has rear light guards and a massive Rovertrax front winch mount bumper. No winch, t died. The body has a two inch lift off the chassis and makes for some very easy maintenance. The sill/slider is a 2 by 4 inch box section that is welded and channeled to the body like 3rd and 4th chassis rails. It has an electric remote gas cap door of a 1995 Range Rover. There is a brake pressure proportioning valve under the floor too for allocating braking ratios to each axle.
