Description

This 1987 Mazda RX-7 SE Coupe was purchased brand new by the original owner on August 29 1987 at Admiral Pontiac Mazda in Glen Burnie Maryland. At the time of purchase the RX-7 had 15 miles on it. The window sticker price was $16219.00. The original owner told me he bought a 1976 Datsun 280Z brand new and decided to buy this RX-7 as his 280Z had started to rust. As a multiple Datsun Z car owner I can attest to the rust issue. He knew from day one that he was going to own the car for a long time and he broke the engine in carefully and never used it for commuting. Over the course of his ownership (August 1987 to February 2008) he always had the oil changed every 1500 to 2000 miles. He lived in NW Washington DC and would use the car on the weekends. The downside is that the car would be parked outside under trees which caused the paint to deteriorate.

My friend had just PCS'd and had planned to use this as a commuter car but his family passed a Toyota Corolla to him so after one month of sitting I ended up purchasing the car for myself. I have owned this RX-7 since March of 2008 and when I bought the car it had roughly 92000 miles on it. Just prior to selling it the original owner had a compression check performed and the results were 9.0/9.4 every seal. I am not sure what those numbers would be today but this car has not been abused and I have changed the oil every 2000 to 2500 miles. The engine does not smoke or burn oil between oil changes and it comes out as clean as it goes in and I have always used Mazda oil filters. I have driven the car to Florida once and it drives very well. This is a fairly rare 'survivor' car due to its manual wind up windows and no sunroof. Mazda would repeat this recipe with the GTUs in 1989 and 1990. According to the Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) the car had a shipping weight of 2625 lbs. During the course of my ownership I have kept a maintenance log book noting every gas fill up and all maintenance performed.

The new owner will get all of the paperwork I have for the car to include the window sticker copy of the MSO factory sales brochure factory shop manual as well as some extra parts. It also will come with the three factory keys and a full tank of gas. As with any old car this RX-7 does have its cosmetic issues such as the paint. there are also two small rust areas one of which is pictured on the right rear wheel arch and the other is the located at the bottom of the passenger side fender. During my time with the car I tried to pull the wheels and scrub the wheel wells once a year and I have uploaded pictures of the undercarriage. Things that could stand to be replaced at some point in the near future: the exhaust system is nearing the end of its life (always a chance to upgrade) and the cruise control and air conditioning do not work. In the case of the A/C I removed the fan belt as the compressor was starting to lock up. The Logicon (HVAC control panel) has been replaced with a new Mazda unit so the heat is amazing in the winter time. Rotary Performance in Dallas Tx has new factory Mazda A/C compressors for $199.

Things that have been replaced over the course of my time with the car: rear brake pads calipers and rotors all of the hoses that pass water except one heater hose which is included with the car (I think this hose is under the intake manifold?). New Mazda thermostat at the same time as the Mazda heater hoses and radiator hoses were installed. NGK spark plug wires and I always change the spark plugs every 10k miles or so and it had a new set of NGK plugs last month. I also had a new Mazda headlight/turn signal combination switch replaced as the original unit gave out. I also sourced a second used unit as a spare. I also replaced the shift lever bushings and installed new inner and outer shift boots and I saved the original as a spare which is still in good condition. The original owner had the clutch replaced at around 85k miles. I also replaced a few of the original vacuum lines with silicone hoses. The driver's side fender was replaced a long time ago as someone backed into the fender at the original owner's home in NW DC.

Enjoy the pictures and feel free to email me with any questions you may have. I will only be able to answer your emails in the evening.
