Description

1972 Mercedes 350SL 47. 00 original miles Documented history Early chassis number Here up for bids on eBay is this incredibly well preserved Mercedes 350SL. This car was bought new in Beverly Hills and has been a West Coast car its entire life. 47. 00 original miles with documented service receipts and ownership history. This is an early example of the R107 series. chassis #1129. bought on 12-20-71. The car features mostly original paint. a beautiful original interior. and absolutely zero rust issues anywhere. Click to enlarge any of the photos below. a link to a slideshow of all the enlarged images is available to view at the bottom of the page. For having mostly original paint. this car shines. The right side of the car was keyed long ago and has been repainted. the remainder of the car is original. The paint quality. color match and finish are identical throughout. you'd have to have a trained eye to spot any paintwork on this car. There are a few age related blemishes here and there but overall the car stands tall. I have been over this car from top to bottom and have found no rust issues anywhere - no bubbling. no blistering - no problems. Tires have good tread and the Bundt wheels are flawless. The bumpers are in great shape with excellent chrome. they have never been replated and still look terrific after 42 years. Very nice grill. surround. barrel and star. Classic Hirshmann antenna. The US market 350SL's were built with the 4. 5L motor. dealers would offer to mount a 450SL emblem if the customer preferred it. The original owner declined but stashed it away anyway. it is included with the car. Lights and lenses are all like new. All of the car's anodized trim still looks great. and all of the chrome on this car is terrific with no pitting. The glass is all original. including the windshield. It's all in excellent condition with no scratches or hard water spotting. The passenger side shows the original antifreeze snowflake. the driver's side has the correct "Kinonglas Kristall" branding that verifies factory originality. Wiper blade holders are original. these were often discarded at the first wiper blade change. it's rare to find original examples. The hardtop is similarly well preserved and in great shape. These over-engineered hardtops transform the interior into a weathertight. soundproof cabin for all season enjoyment. Original glass. weatherstripping and headliner are in super condition. The soft top is original to the car (Wopavin branded). it shows some seam separation at the lower left side of the rear window but overall is hanging in there after 43 years. There's no substitute for originality but if you need perfection you'll want to replace it. The cover for the soft top compartment is surprisingly free of the dents and dings you normally see in this area. Clean and rust free soft top compartment. underside of the lid still shows the original foam pads. Reallly excellent trunk with tool kit and original spare. Side panelboards and tail light asemblies are both like new. Spare tire well is rust free. Fortunately the center and right rubber mats are in good original condition because replacements are not available. Spare tire lid still has its elastic support strap. later years changed to plastic. The interior is like stepping back in time. it's all original and beautifully preserved. Very nice steering well still showing its full texture. Dash pad has no cracks or splits. Good windshield header and sunvisors. VIN tag shows a production date of 9-71. Switchgear is all in good condition. Gauges all work correctly and show good consistent readings. Clock is correct twice a day. The plastic edging on the shifter gate is all intact and looking great. Heater and vent levers move freely. The car has an aftermarket Blaupunkt cassette and ADS amplifier. I'm normally a snob for radio originality but this is a pretty nice setup with great sound. I can't vouch for the state of the AC system. at the least it will need a recharge. Glovebox contains the factory manuals and release levers for the tops. These early 107's used the leftover cases from the 113 series for these levers. an expensive item if you can find them. Great door panels and sill plates. Windows wind smoothly. locks work correctly. Not sure why the color of the two door panels came out different in the photos. I can assure you that they match in person. Clean rear cargo area. Underneath shows the installation of the ADS equipment. probably pretty high end equipment back then. The footwells tell the story of this car. just a well cared for survivor. Interior lighting all works. seatbelts are like new. The car comes with a full assortment of original paperwork including the original data plate. A service stamp from 1972 shows that the speedometer was replaced at the dealership when the car has 4882 miles. This puts the total mileage of the car right around 47. 00. This SL runs and drives just as you'd expect from a low mile car. It starts easily and runs down the road with decorum. The car shifts precisely. brakes well. runs cool and has a firm. solid suspension. It's equally at home on the freeway as it is around town. You'll like the way this car runs and drives. The car comes with service receipts and documentation of all owners. Recent receipts chronicle brake work. new Bilstein shocks. a new muffler and new driveline flex discs front and rear. The undercarriage is all original. never hit. never rusted. this is what a R107 undercarriage should look like. With W113 prices climbing into the stratosphere. some collectors are beginning to see these R107s as the next in line. As with most collectible cars. first or last year examples with low miles will always remain blue chip investments. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images.
