YOU ARE VIEWING A VERY LOVELY 1951 MERCEDES 170S. I HAVE PROUDLY OWNED THISFINE AUTOMOBILEFOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, AS WELL AS QUITE A FEW OTHER VINTAGE MERCEDES). HAVING RECENTLY RETIRED TO A MOUNTAIN HOME, HEBENZ IS DRIVEN INFREQUENTLY. IT NOW DESERVES A NEW OWNER.
THE PRE-WAR STYLING OF THIS BENZ IS DUE IN LARGE PART TO THE ALLIED BOMBING IN THE SPRING OF 1945 THAT HAD REDUCED MOST OF DAIMLER-BENZ PRODUCTION TO RUBBLE, ITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE UNTERTURKHEIM AND SINDELFINGEN PLANTS. PRODUCTION WAS RESTARTED IN LATE 1947, ND WITH ONLY TOOLING LEFT FROM THE PRE-WAR 170 MODEL, T ONLY MADE SENSE TO RESUME PRODUCTION WITH THAT MODEL. OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS REFINEMENTS WERE MADE TO THE 170 MODEL;WITH THE LONGER 170S SEDAN AND 170S CABRIOLET MODELS, ERCEDES HAD EMERGED FROM THE ASHES.
THE CAR DRIVES QUITE WELL FOR A SIXTY-FIVE YEAR OLD AUTOMOBILE. THE FOUR SPEED, ULLY SYNCHROMESH TRANSMISSION SHIFTS SMOOTHLY, LUTCH IS STRONG, ITH NO GRINDING BETWEEN GEAR SHIFTS. THE FULLY INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION PROVIDES A NICE RIDE, ND MAJOR STEERING COMPONENTS ARE CENTRALLY LUBRICATED WITH ONE PUSH OF THE FLOOR MOUNTED GREASEPLUNGER. THE ENGINE IS STRONG AND STARTS ON THE FIRST PRESS ON THE FLOOR MOUNTED STARTER PEDAL. HEADLIGHTS, OG LIGHTS, AIL LIGHTS, ORN, ADIO, BECKER "SOLITUDE" MULTI-BAND), LOCK, UAGES, IPERS, LOWER( RATTLES), URN SIGNALS,(TRAFFICATORS), EATER, ND VENTS ALL WORK WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CIGAR LIGHTER AND THE FUEL GUAGE,(ERRATIC...PROBABLY A BAD SENDING UNIT). IN SHORT, HE CAR MAKES FOR A NICE WEEKEND "DRIVER", ND A CERTAIN CROWD PLEASER AT CAR SHOWS.
IN THE MID TO LATE NINETIES, HE CAR WAS TAKEN DOWN TO THE FRAME. THE BODY PANELS WERE REMOVED, RIMED AND INDIVIDUALLY PAINTED WITH LAQUER. THE FINISH ISVERYNICE, LL CHROME IS INTACT AND PRESENTABLE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE REAR BUMPER WHICH HAS A FEW SMALL AREAS OF CHROME PEELING. I HAVE FOUND NO RUST IN THIS CAR. THE INTERIOR WOOD IS BEAUTIFUL, HE CARPETS ARE CLEAN AND PROTECTED WITH CUSTOM FIT FLOOR MATS.THERE ARE NO RIPS IN THE SEATS, EADLINER, UNROOF, R DOOR PANELS. THE SUNROOF OPENS, OLDS, ND CLOSES EASILY. THE INTERIOR CHROME IS VERY NICE, S ARE THE GUAGES, LOCK, IALS, ND RADIO. ALL WINDOWS WORK SMOOTHLY, LTHOUGH THERE IS A SMALL 6" CRACK IN THE LOWERCORNER OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WINDOW. THE CAR HAS BEEN CONVERTED FROM TWO SIX VOLT BATTERIES TO ONE TWELVE VOLT BATTERY, LONG WITH THE ADDITION OF AN ALTERNATOR.
AS AN INVESTMENT, HE 170S ISCERTAIN TO APPRECIATE. THERE ARE FEW PRE-WAR STYLE MERCEDES THAT CAN BE BOUGHT, RIVEN, ND ENJOYED BY THE AVERAGE COLLECTOR.
