Description

Mercedes Benz 1970 280SL “Pagoda”

Offered for sale- a stunning, clean, mechanically sound and very desirable collectable Mercedes Benz 280SL -”Pagoda” in Tobacco Brown (423).

39,891 Miles on the odometer. Rare 4- Speed Manual Transmission.

In 1963 Mercedes introduced the W113 chassis on which an all-new SL was built. The new SL line was a complete departure from the 190SL (W121) and a different car compared to the 300SL (W198). The body was designed by Paul Braq and was offered with both a soft top and, as an option, a removable hard top. The design of the hardtop incorporates a concave roof shape and when viewed from the front resembles a Japanese Pagoda. Thus Pagoda became the adopted name for the series of three generations – 230SL, 250SL and 280 SL. Production on the W113 ended in the spring of 1971, eight years after its introduction, with the new R107 chassis. Production of the 280SL started in 1967. A total of 23,885 cars were produced during 1967-1971 and 12,927 were destined for the US. In 1968 the 280SL got an engine upgrade to a bored/stroked 2.8 liter version of the Bosh-injected inline six. The majority of production was with the four- speed automatic transmission. In the time of the W113 production, Mercedes did not offer factory installed air-conditioning in Germany. But there was demand for it in the US and it became a dealer installed option.

Information obtained from mercedes-benz classic-center.

This 1970 280SL's VIN 113.044-10-013656 and Engine# 130-983-16005297 provenance is partially known. The first owner was the Brazillian Ambassador to the U.S.A. The second owner was from New Jersey. The current owner has owned it since October 1994. This meticulously maintained Pagoda comes with two tops (soft and hard) . It was restored in 1997. The body was repainted to the Mercedes body color-Tobacco Brown. It has an Ivory soft top in fair condition – there is a small tear on the passenger side. The plastic rear window is in good condition. The Saddle interior also is in good condition with only a small hole in the drivers side. Included in the sale is the roof, tool kit, keys and books.

The car is equipped with an 4-speed manual transmission, power steering, six cylinder engine, Mercedes full hub-caps, Becker stereo radio and Sanyo speakers ( aftermarket). The trunk carries a covered spare tire with and the Mercedes tool kit plus a jack. The FRIGIKING Air Conditioning Unit Available upon request for an additional $3000.(not installed).

A 354 rear differential was exchanged for a more comfortable drive. Seller will provide the original 410 (not installed) if desired.

This particular example remains extremely original with an interior, instruments and dash all in good and working order. This rare 1970 280SL drives and performs beautifully. On the exterior the paint is in good condition and the panel fit is good all around. There is a small rust spot at the weep hole on passenger side. This car has the typical oil leaks for its age. This car has been taken care of very well and can continue to provide many pleasures to its owner.

The market continues to rise on the Pagoda, especially one in as good condition as this one. No collector would want to be without this fine wonderfully driving classic.
