Description

Here is a 1960 Mercedes Benz 190Db. diesel 4-door sedan. This series of Benz's are known as "Pontons". which describes their puffy pontoon styling. The odometer says 58. 00 plus change. but it should be assumed to be at least 158. 00. I spoke with the 2nd owner's daughter. who tells me her Dad bought the car in Georgia around 1964. He owned it for the next 40 years or so. where the car remained in Virginia. Around 2004 the car was sold off locally in Virginia. but what happened next is unknown. It subsequently ended up in Ohio. where I purchased the car. The car really looks relatively unmolested. with the exception of a repaint. Originally the car was Light Blue. but was repainted in silver/grey at some point. The headliner is out of the car. as these headliners were known for deterioration. The seats are original. as are the door cards. dash. steering wheel. and really most of the rest of the car. It's really sort of a time capsule. with a charming-yet-worn originality about it. Mechanically the car starts and runs like a Swiss watch. I recently drove it on a 100-mile trip. and it ran great. Brakes will need some work. as cylinders can all use rebuilding or replacement. That said. the car does stop. and I drive it without hesitation. but I would advise a brake overhaul. I had the starter rebuilt at a cost of $300. and I installed a commercial grade high-cranking battery which cranks the car just fine. All other mechanical systems seem to function well for an original 55-year old car. Electrics are pretty darn good. and all lights work with the exception of the "beehives". The old tube radio even comes on and heats up. but the speaker is likely toasted and thus the radio produces no sound. Body is very sound. with practically no visible rust. and no detectable bondo. All panels respond to the magnet. and despite a few dings and scratches. the body really looks good on this car. Sure. there may be some bondo in the car. but honestly I just can't find it. Look at photos of the rockers. inner fenders etc. it looks really solid. Floor pans are good. rockers seem good. fender wells are good with just some minor rust behind the front wheels. Refer to pictures to make your assessment of the undercarriage. it isn't perfect. but given it's age. it's excellent for this year and model of car. Interior. seats frames are in good shape. but upholstery is tattered and sun damaged. Door cards are similarly faded. but are actually in good original condition. amazing actually how well they show. Headliner is gone. I installed a homemade carpet set. made from carpet I had left over. I cut it to fit and had it bound. and it looks good. Carpet just lays in. so removal is easy. Floor pans under the carpet look great. no rust. never been messed with. dry as a bone. Engine runs well. but of course would need some updating/tuning/freshening. Heater boxes are removed due to deterioration. Suspension seems good. but of course bushings probably need attention. Still. the car rides well. and steers great with no suspension noises whatsoever. Please feel free to ask any questions. and I will gladly answer. I have described the car as honestly as I can. and I feel it's a great car. and a perfect candidate for a restoration. I am relocating from Ohio to Florida. and so I need to thin the herd. I have a 75 BMW 2002 in mid-resto. so the Benz is just too much right now.
