Description

1985 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Turbodiesel – VIN WDBCB20C7FA134826

It is with great regret that I present my clean 1985 126-chassis Mercedes-Benz 300SD Turbodiesel – the last of the indestructible iron-block OM617a-powered Mercedes inline 5-cylinder turbodiesels. Unfortunately, have to sell to fund the exorbitant repair of my 2010 S-class. Trust me, f I could afford to get out from under that car instead, surely would!

Wearing just over 114,000 miles, his car has been a family weekend runabout for us. As a freelance automotive journalist, bought the car to own and write about as a hobby but never intended to use it as a daily driver, lthough I wouldn't hesitate to use it for that purpose or to drive it anywhere. The car comes with 3 factory master keys including one in the original leather pouch and original books and manuals.

The car has had substantial recent reconditioning after being used sparingly for the last several years. Among the key items repaired, aintained, r upgraded are: replacement of the rear muffler, he brake booster and brake pads, he auxiliary cooling fan, he air cleaner mounts, he air conditioning compressor, VP relay, indshield wipers, ear shocks, way bar links, attery, il pan, nd valve cover gasket. The oil and filter were just changed (last week of June, 015). The underhood insulation is a little tired and falling down, nd a new pad conveys with the car (just haven’t gotten around to installing it yet!). The air conditioning was converted to R-134 at the same time the compressor was replaced. All of this work was done in the last 300 miles and 2 months.

On the inside, his car is in very nice condition. The palomino feintuft velour carpet is in excellent condition, nd is covered with matching OEM carpet floormats. The power leather seats and dash are crack and rip free showing only the slightest patina of age save for one tiny crack on the dash by one of the speaker grilles - hardly noticeable. There are no foul odors, ust the smell of old Mercedes inside. The air conditioning, ower windows, unroof, nd power locks all work properly, nd the car is current on the stringent Virginia safety inspection. The aftermarket CD/radio turns on and off properly. The antenna was replaced with a Heishmann manual unit. It is important to note that the vacuum systems including the locks, hift actuator, nd climate control adjustment pods are all functioning properly - a rarity on even the nicest of these cars!! This car came with the rare rear headrest option (from the factory, ot bolted-in later) which gives a more executive feel to the back seat experience. All of the gauges and the odometers function properly, lthough the fuel gauge jumps around from time to time.

Outside, he car is remarkably straight save for some parking lot dings - it's a very nice 5-footer, ut upon closer inspection you can see some age and wear in the paint. The dark blue paint carries a nice shine, nd the doors shut with the appropriate thunk. All of the lenses are in good, lear condition. The alloy wheels are brand new later-style aftermarket 8-hole 16” versions wearing brand-new Kumho all-season performance tires. The original spare tire in the trunk along with a complete tool kit and jack. The interior headliner could use a clean but is in very nice condition. I replaced the US-spec sealed-beam with proper European halogen units which not only look better but put-off much better light. The fog lights have Hella super-yellow high-output halogen bulbs.

The motor starts amazingly easily and settles to a very smooth idle. The power steering functions properly, nd the 4-speed automatic transmission shifts as nice as any of these that I have ever driven (at least 20) with no flaring. Additionally, he shifter bushings were replaced recently. There are no odd noises or whines from the driveline. The brakes are in good condition and do not pull. Oil pressure and water temperature are perfect, nd there is no excessive blowby indicative of higher-mileage 617 diesels. The car pulls like a freight train and is ready to provide its next owner with another three decades of service!
