Nothing was easy about Mercedes-Benz’s decision to replace the 300SL, nd while the next car to carry the SL name, he 190SL, arned a following, t was very different from the 300. Mercedes-Benz’s corporate board asked for a car that would combine the affordability of the 190 and the performance of the 300, ielding the 230SL in 1963. That car was highly capable, s a famous victory in the nonstop, our-day Spa-Sofia-Liège Rally demonstrated, ut still the cry came for more power under the distinctive hood. The original 2.3-liter engine begat a 2.5 and, ltimately, he 2.8 in 1968.
Designed by Frenchman Paul Bracq, he 280SL was technologically ahead of its time, ffering fuel-injection and four wheel disc brakes. Most models in the North American Market featured a 4 Speed Automatic Transmission and Air conditioning, aking the SL into a desirable luxury cruiser. The hardtop was designed to hold 1000kg, nd to be as solid as a coupe in the event of a rollover, he roof's stepped panels is where it earned the nickname "Pagoda".
Despite its compact appearance, he 280SL is quite roomy and comfortable, nd while it had a stout body structure, he removable steel pagoda roof raised curb weight to around 3,100 pounds, nd the torquey and smooth seven-main M130 engine still drives it to 60 mph under 10 seconds.

This beautiful Pagoda found its way into a major car collection in Florida, nd was sold in 2013 to a collector in Canada. While in Florida, his Pagoda was meticulously restored back to the proper and correct factory specifications. We’ve seen a lot of Pagodas over the years and very few have been restored to this level and with this level of authenticity. There are no signs of rust anywhere, ot in the trunk, ot under the struts, he underside is incredibly clean, ou can tell that nothing was untouched by the restorer. We found no sign of leaks. The engine runs incredibly strong and shifts well. If you are looking for one of the best 280SLs on the market, rom the final year of productions then look no further. It is wonderful to find a Pagoda with desirable factory options like Air Conditioning, ecker AM/FM Radio, imited Slip differential, wo tops, ower steering and automatic transmission.
These cars have become increasingly desirable when correctly and completely restored. Recent auction sales have posted numbers as high as $220,000 USD (Gooding & Company, melia Island, 015). They are the best examples of the W113 type and are the successors to the legendary 300SL of the 50s and early 60s. A pleasure to drive and beautiful to behold.
