Description

This 1958 Mercedes 220S Cabriolet is a complete and running project that presents a great basis for restoration. Most original details remain intact, aving been purchased by the previous owner in 1982 and left parked in his garage since the 1990's. The car was repainted sometime in the 1980's. It is believed to have been factory equipped with the current front bucket seats and an ivory steering wheel, nd while engine verification has been difficult to confirm, e believe believe the original drive-train remains in place with a four-speed manual transmission and twin Solex downdraft carburetors.

These elegant cabriolets were produced in limited numbers and hand built at Sindelfingen to the very high Mercedes standard of the era.

The S Cabriolet was the top of the model range in 1958 and featured a fully retractable convertible roof – this car benefits from a new top. The two-tone paint scheme was present on many of these cabrios, ut all that we have seen scallop the lower color back from the side trim at the headlight and include an additional piece of chrome trim there. That trim is not present on this car, nd the vertical color seam is not factory, o it is not clear whether this was originally a two-tone version. Some rust bubbling is evident on the exterior and much of the chrome shows pitting. Around 1,280 coupés and cabriolets were produced during the 1958 model year.

The interior looks original and serviceable. It could benefit from a good cleaning, nd red leather seats, ood dash, nd ivory wheel all present in decent condition. Original details are intact with correct door panel trim, nd original radio. The cockpit could be improved with seat upholstery and a carpet kit, ut most importantly the car is complete. All the little door pulls and miscellaneous parts are hard to find and can be kept as-is or refurbished. The keys were lost years ago and the steering lock has been disabled.

There is some rust present mainly around the front bumper mounts. Floors and support channels look solid and while some metalwork will be necessary, ith a limited number of examples remaining this looks like one worthy of restoration to driver or concours level, epending on how far the new owner wishes to go. The jack mounting points have been completely redone and are all fresh metal and professionally installed.

The fuel system has been flushed, he carbs cleaned, nd the car start and runs. This was accomplished by jumping power to the ignition. The car has been driven around the property, onfirming that neither the brakes nor engine are frozen. These cars were equipped with independent front suspension, rear swing axle, oil-spring suspension, nd four-wheel servo-assist drum brakes.

I will be happy to schedule a viewing of the car with one days notice. Please feel free to ask any questions and if there are any additional pictures you would like to see, ust ask.

Good Luck.
