Description

1961 MGA MK I Roadster – 48K original documented miles with original tool kit

Up for auction is my 1961 MGA MKI roadster (chassis # GHNL-87890). This beautiful Iris Blue car was built in July/August of 1960 and is a matching numbers car with its original 1588cc MGA engine (16GA- U-18751) and 4 speed gear box.

It was painted once in its lifetime many years ago in its original factory color of Iris Blue. It comes with its original tool kit (very rare and expensive) convertible top side curtains spare wheel jack starter crank manuals and documentation for the past 30 years. Odometer reads 48501 original miles and is believed to be authentic and accurate. I purchased this car from the second owner who owned it for almost 25 years who bought it with only 33K miles. It’s a North Carolina car from new with no rust or accident damage.

This MGA is registered with NAMGAR (#7406). It runs and drives excellent and is an honest unrestored and unmolested MGA. This car was maintained garaged and well cared for by its previous owners and never rusted or repaired. This car is registered with vintage New York plates from 1961.

Mechanicals: The MGA is currently registered in New York State Insured and has been safety inspected. It sits garaged in Huntington New York (Long Island). Turn the key hear the fuel pump tick pull the choke out three clicks the engine starts right up every time. Engine idles at 800 and is as smooth running as a sewing machine. It runs very strong and does not smoke or have any oil leaks to speak of. Once the engine warms up after a minute you push in the choke and off you go.

Engine acceleration is smooth and sounds great. Carbs were tuned and set up spec on along with a valve adjustment and timing several months ago. It has a nice crisp exhaust note through its new stainless steel exhaust system. Oil pressure is strong at 75+ psi and revs quickly to 6000 rpms without any hesitation at all.

I have owned many MGA’s in my time and this car is one the smoothest and best running and driving cars of them all. Steering is nice and tight and shocks are firm. Gear box is quiet and pulls well in all 4 gears without any grinds noises or hesitation. The clutch is perfectly aligned light and a pleasure to shift up and down through all the gears. You can literally drive it 60-80 mph all day long.

The following are new parts/services:

  • New Blue Loop carpet set

  • New Gas Tank

  • New Fuel pump

  • Rebuilt Master Cylinder (Clutch and Brake)

  • New Interstate battery

  • New tune up parts (wires cap rotor points condenser plugs)

  • Rebuilt carbs tuned and balanced

  • Valve adjustment and timing set

  • New gas and air filters

  • Radiator flushed and painted

  • Rebuilt generator

  • New hoses

  • New Stainless Steel Exhaust system

  • New rear chrome bumper

  • New ARMCO Wind Wings

  • Amber turn signals (front and rear)

  • New H-4 Halogen headlights 55Watts

  • New Chrome Hub Caps

The brake system is very good and the car stops quickly and in a straight line with no fade or pulling to either side. Sometimes the right rear wheel locks up in heavy braking but that can be adjusted. It has factory front wheel disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Pads and shoes are all in good condition. Radiator and engine has been flushed and all hoses replaced. Engine runs cool with no overheating at all. Charging system works as it should. All gauges and lights work perfectly. I have driven this car on 100 mile daily trips with confidence. It literally needs nothing and can be driven anywhere.

Body: Body is straight as an arrow and accident free. The car was painted sometime in its long history in its original color of Iris Blue. Paint is presentable but has some scratches touch ups and imperfections. All body panels fit well with excellent door gaps. Fenders doors inner and outer sills are original panels. There is absolutely no discernable body filler or rust that I can see on the fenders rocker panels or dog legs. Wooden floors are in fair condition but firm. The frame is perfect and rust free. No patches or evidence of rust anywhere. Front windshield glass and chrome metal frame is perfect with no scratches cracks or chips. That is the telltale sign that this is a low mileage car. Luggage rack seems to be an aftermarket period item.

Interior: The dash is 100% original with working gauges buttons and knobs. Blue Loop Carpets is newly installed and looks incredible. Seats are covered in Black leather. Door panels are original and in nice condition. Original banjo steering wheel comes with the car (Moto-Lita wheel does not come with the car It belongs to a friend of mine and I eventually need to give it back to him someday). Door caps and cockpit rails are in leather and all in nice condition with a nice tight fit.

Closing: This is a 54 year old car so it is sold “AS IS” with no expressed or implied warrantee or guarantees. I am not a broker or a dealer so this is a private sale that is final. It is sold “WHERE IS” in Huntington New York and if transported will be the cost of the buyer. I have set a reasonable reserve on the car. Hagerty Insurance Co has an agreed upon value on this MGA of $28000. Low mileage MGA’s are getting harder and harder to find in unmolested and unrestored condition. These cars are getting very sought after by collectors and car enthusiasts and are appreciating rapidly for good quality cars.

I have a current valid transferrable New York state registration. The state of New York does not issues titles on cars built prior to 1972.

If you are a serious buyer and have any questions or need any detailed photos please call or text me at 631-339-3349 or contact me through E-Bay email by asking me a question. I will sell to Europe/ worldwide and to anyone who appreciates this low mileage 1961 MGA MKI. I have the right to end this auction early since I will advertise on other venues. I will request a $500 deposit within 48 hours and the balance shortly thereafter. I will hold the car for you until payment and transportation has been made. Regrettably the payment of two college tuitions this fall forces sale. Thanks for your interest. Dave.
