This a 1955 MG TF 1500, DC 46/8021, ngine XPEG TF/1884. Originally painted MG Red, t was manufactured on 16 November 1954. The engine and body numbers match factory records. The maker’s plate on the engine firewall contains both of these numbers. The car number 8021 is stamped into the left front frame extension, nd the engine number 1884 is on the bronze plaque on the engine.
The car was in running condition when the previous owner purchased it in California in 1965. He intended to restore it, ut circumstances forced him to move the car from one garage to another. After languishing in California for 48 years, purchased the car in 2013.
The car appears to be in nearly original condition, lthough it clearly shows the wear of ten years of use.
The non-original aspects I am aware of are: - The car was repainted at some point to its present color, early Autumn Red. - The rear license plate lamp is over-size. - Two ashtrays are installed beneath the glove boxes. - There are two holes in the sheet metal on the passenger side. One on the rear splash apron and one on the cowl just forward of the windshield. The holes appear to be the same size and may have been used for antennas for a long-gone radio. - The driver-side chrome door latch was unusable, hich I replaced with a new one. The rear view mirror was likewise corroded. A new one is included along with the original. - The choke knob is round and plain; a spare original octagonal choke knob w/ ‘C’ and cable are included. All instruments are present. The white paint on the needles and numbers is somewhat yellow and cracked in spots. The odometer has 70,677 miles on it. I have no way to verify that this is accurate. The windscreen wiper system is complete including the motor and control knobs. The windscreen itself is complete with the chrome in fair-to-good condition. None of the mechanicals have been tested. The wiring harness is original.
The original seats and rugs are present, ut in terrible condition. In sharp contrast, he interior panels are in surprisingly good, but fair, ondition . The hood (top) is a vinyl replacement in useable, ut fair to poor, ondition. A small tear has been covered with tape. A vinyl tonneau in similar condition is present. The four side curtain frames are present but have lots of surface rust; all the nuts appear to be present as well. The side curtain coverings are in disaster condition; plexiglass mostly missing, racked, everely yellowed with age.
The engine can be turned with the hand crank. The transmission shifter moves smoothly between all gears. 1-1/2 inch SU carbs with the original pancake-style air cleaners are fitted. The exhaust system is in poor condition and will need to be replaced. The tires have exceeded their useful life; they hold air but are good only to move around the shop floor or tow the car at slow speed.
To my untrained eye, he frame appears to be straight and there is no evidence of the car having been in an accident. There is one small dent on the right wing on top of the headlamp protrusion. The paint is chipped in spots and the car clearly needs to be painted. Except for an area approximately 6" square on the driver’s door (which may have been puttied), he sheet metal is in excellent condition.
I used an ice pick to carefully check accessible wood. All the wood appears to be very sound: no sign of softness or rot. For example, he driver-side door sags just a bit due to a worn hinge pin; the pillar to which it is attached shows no evidence of deterioration.
The condition of the chrome trim varies widely. Many pieces are just tarnished and free of pitting and respond well to elbow grease. The radiator shell and slats have some shallow scratches and and virtually no pitting. Both bumpers have substantial pitting and should be re-chromed. Four original hub caps are present, wo of which are heavily corroded. Five new hub caps are included.
The tool box contains original King Dick tools, n original jack and handle, nd a Tecalemit grease gun. The engine crank also appears to be original.
Just about all rubber parts will need to be replaced. The radiator and gas tank appear to be in good shape, ut both have been empty for nearly 48 years. There is just a wee bit of oil in the engine sump, ot enough to register on the dipstick.
Overall, he car is roughly 99% complete. I’ve verified the following items are absent: - Two bumper overriders: of the two remaining one has a sizable dent in it. - Battery (present but unusable) - Door check on driver’s side - Engine inspection panels
The original owner’s manual is present, ncluding his notes and comments.
There is no PA state title; PA does not title vehicles in non-running condition.
