Description
For Sale: 1987 L 300 Mitsubishi Delica Turbo Diesel Starwagon Exceed 70000 Km/44000 miles Quite possibly the cleanest and most restored example in the world! The L 300 Starwagon began production in 1986 as the second generation of Mitsubishi’s popular 4WD van. Using essentially similar running gear to the Mitsubishi Pajero(Montero in the US) the L 300 proved extremely popular and is similar in concept to the Volkswagen Vanagon Synchro, but with arguably a more robust 4WD system, engine and transmission. Final production of the L 300 Starwagon 4WD continued until 2006, though the introduction of the L 400 Spacewagon, beginning in 1994, took away some of the market for the L 300 Starwagon. Never the less, the Starwagon remained popular throughout its production run. As the cars were never imported into North America, they are gray market vehicles and most come from Japan where they were and are still status symbols. Before buying one, a few notes. It is essential to know that a particular car comes from an area with little or no salt. Like the Vanagons, the pinch welds at sills between the wheels are subject to corrosion if coming from a salty environment like Tokyo and surrounding prefectures.. Additionally the metal underlayment supporting the plastic rear bumper is subject to corrosion on all cars regardless of where they came from, as water collects under the plastic step and cannot escape. Mechanicals are fairly trouble free. The early L300s use an oil cooled turbo which presents fewer problems than the later turbos. As well the cooling system is subject to scaling in the Japanese environment, so once in North America it is essential to replace the radiator, fan clutch and flush the system. Since these engines can run hot if pushed hard, having an efficient cooling system is important. Overheating can cause the alloy heads to crack, a major expense. A timing belt drives the single overhead camshaft which is prone to failure at mileages around 70,000 km. Replacing this will ensure that the car will not be subject to a failure in this area. This has been done as well as extensive other maintenance as you will see below in this description. This particular car was imported from Japan through Canada to the US in the fall of 2013. It is a low roof Aero style which gets better fuel economy than the high roof models. As well, it is easier to park in parking garages. The Delica was purchased in November 2013 and intended to use it as an expedition vehicle once it was here in the US. With a serial number of 0009688, it shows to have been manufactured in June of 1987. With a model number of SNPT-1, it has a somewhat rare and desirable five speed gear box with a center power sunroof. It also has electric door locks all around, and wind up windows for the two front seats. During the time the car has been in North America, many NOS parts from Australia, Japan and the Philippines have been acquired in order to have quite possibly, the cleanest L 300 Starwagon in existence. As with any older vehicle, plastic degrades with UV exposure and many interior and exterior trim pieces have been acquired as best as possible. These include front and rear bumper fairing pieces which are nowalmost impossible to find NOS. As well, the vehicle has been professionally repainted in two part from the waist down and finished off with new decals and emblems as shown in photos. Work since importation, includes; Cooling system: 1. New fan clutch 2. New radiator 3. Cooling system flush 4. New hoses 5. New thermostat Engine mechanical 1. New timing belt 2. Installed NOS crankcase oil breather collector(rare factory accessory) Engine Electrical 1. New battery 2. New battery strap and tray Brakes 1. New front calipers 2. New front rotors 3. New front pads 4. New rear cylinders 5. New rear pads 6. Brake system flush Clutch 1. Clutch hydraulic system flush Transmission 1. Gearbox flush 2. Transfer case flush 3. Differential flush Tires 1. New BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A 225 X 75 R15 Body Exterior 1.NOS wide bull bar and plastic cover powder coated in red Hammerite(originally had narrow type) 2.NOS front steps powder coated in red Hammerite(car did not have this option from new) 3.NOS side step powder coated in red Hammerite(original had a slight bend on mounts) 4.New gaskets for all glass including sun roof Body Interior 1. NOS dash instrument cluster(old housing was cracked but functional) 2. Many new interior plastic trim pieces In addition to the aforementioned work, the vehicle comes with all receipts as well as hundreds of additional spare parts that are all NOS with receipts of over $7000.00 spent, some have been installed and many would be in boxes that come with the vehicle. Many parts were purchased due to availability rather than need of replacement. Receipts also include the paintwork and other refinishing which adds up to just over $12000. The parts and paint are worth more than the asking price of this vehicle, let alone vehicle purchase price, importation and recent servicing (with paperwork). You will not find another example that has no rust, has received as much restoration, refinishing and parts replacement as this Delica. It is turn key, everything done with many spare parts included. Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions. Serial/VIN# P25W-0009688
