As the 1960's closed, utomakers were using two approaches to save performance-hungry customers insurance money. One was to develop small-displacement cars with performance characteristics. The second was to offer a big-inch V-8 in an intermediate body style, ut without the VIN that signaled "high-performance" to your insurance agent.
In 1970 Oldsmobile blew one right past the insurance industry by stuffing its torque-monster 455-cu.in. V-8 into a Cutlass Supreme SX. By not giving it a unique VIN, ew car buyers in 1970 and 1971 avoided paying increasingly high insurance premiums. And in stark contrast to the budget muscle cars, he SX went full-zoot with plush, omfortable interiors.
Built only in 1970 and 1971, he Cutlass Supreme SX offered muscle car power, ithout air-induction hoods and body stripes. Hinting at performance were the chrome exhaust trumpets through cutouts in the rear bumper (ala 4-4-2), ut they were about the only sign of the iron being pumped under the flat hood. The other outward signs of an SX are the emblems on the front fenders under the "Cutlass" script.
When the Cutlass Supreme SX debuted, ts buyer had a choice between the standard engine, 33 in late 1969 until February and March 1970, nd the optional L32. Mid year, he L31 engine replaced the L33. The L33 455 had 320 hp, two-barrel carburetor and was dubbed the "turnpike cruiser". With 500-lbs.ft. of torque, nd a 10.25:1 compression ratio, t was an axle-twister and would be one of the last of the real killer big-bore V-8s.
All SXs used the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmission, andatory with the Y-79 (SX) Performance Package. Manual transmissions were not available. The standard Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 carried an OD code. The standard SX rear gear was an ultra-tall 2.56:1.
The SX is very rare compared to the 4-4-2s. Total production numbers were low, ith only 9,374 hardtops and convertibles built in the two years.
This is the car that took the place of the 4-4-2 if you didn't want all the performance goodies. It was a luxury and gentleman's hot rod rolled into one.
This car was entered in many car shows and the trophies go with the car. First place winner at the 2003 Oldsmobile Nationals-Cincinnati, hio. First place winner at the 1998 O.C.A. National Meet-Springfield, llinois.
This car is a beautiful show car. You will turn heads and catch plenty of attention. This car is one to be very proud of. Good luck with your bidding.
