1972 Bremen Citation Dune Buggy

Up for bids is this rare 1972 Citation Dune Buggy. The 60s and 70s saw a multitude of buggy manufacturers jumping in on the Manx bandwagon. Bremen Speed Equipment of Indiana started in 1969 and produced many makes and styles of custom bodies well into the 1990's. Although no longer making car bodies, he Bremen Company still exists today as Bremen Composites; a thermoform plastics specialist.
This buggy was built in 1972 and features a 140hp Corvair drivetrain. The original owner and builder retired to Oregon in 1980 and brought the Citation with him. It then sat indoors in a heated warehouse for the next 35 years! I bought the car from him this summer and set about putting it back on the road. After removing the body, serviced the brakes, lutch, ngine and transmission. This little buggy then emerged from its Rip Van Winkle slumber and hit the ground running.

Fun looks from every angle, ack in an era when crazy and wild was the design goal.
The tires are original to 1972. They have a little flat spotting from sitting which may be able to work itself out after some miles are put on them. They looked so period correct that I thought it'd be a shame to replace them.

This Citation was optioned with a factory hardtop, t brings the appearance up a few notches on the wacky scale.

The hardtop latches down in 4 spots along the tub. The windshield is a Sigla piece with no wear, t looks great.
Aside from a few nicks and scuffs on the body, he only area that doesn't show well is the bonnet. Those spots you see are etched in, aybe from bird droppings. I think that some careful color sanding and precise touchup could make them disappear.

The gel coat is all original and still looking great, specially in direct sunlight.

Here's the original title from 1972 and the assigned VIN plate, ever attached.

1965 Corvair tail lights were sourced to go along with the powertain choice.
Front "grill" has a face only a mother could love.
Factory label on the tub shows a factory serial number of BSE1078.

The interior has VW sourced seats and carpet kit.

If you think Tesla's are advanced, heck out the informational interface on this baby: Outside temperature, umidity gauge and clock! That you have to wind.
Instrument cluster is from a Corvair Spyder, ll gauges are functional except for the gas gauge. I simply look down the straight filler neck on the hood to gauge the level. The horn and wipers aren't working and I never did find the time to get them operational. E-brake also needs looking into. To the left of the instrument cluster sits 3 classic Stewart Warner gauges, he amp and oil temperature gauges have never been hooked up, ut the oil pressure gauge is operational. The car features a desirable Hurst Saf-T-Shifter. The rear cargo area has a removable seat cushion for the kids. No seatbelts but I think it'd be pretty straightfoward to add them later.

With the body off the pan I was able to go through the mechanicals completely. I installed new brake hoses, heel cylinders and master cylinder. Brake linings and drums were good so I just repacked the bearings. The Rochester 4Jet carb was completely rebuilt and the fuel system drained and flushed. Transaxle was flushed and filled with GL-4 gear oil. New points, lugs, ires and cap. The clutch disc was replaced and a new flywheel was installed; custom ground, alanced and bolted by Corvair Underground in McMinnville Oregon.
This motor runs great, t pulls very strongly with no smoke or noise, nd has a smooth balanced idle. It's very quick off the line and has all the power you'd probably need. Steering is quick and tight.

Original license plate from 1972. Flywheel from Corvair Underground. Special aftermarket IECO intake runners. The RB suffix on the block decodes to the 140hp variant that was only available in 1966-67. The heads are 3856728 and the distributor is 1110330, oth correct for the high HP motor.

Pan was shortened 14.5" and has no rust issues. Just a neat old buggy with loads of originality.
