Description

Please note that experience shows us that the photobucket of over 100 large pixel pictures posted here are in most cases best viewed and downloaded using the very latest and most updated version of the 'Firefox' browser as some other browsers and especially older browser versions are not capable of accommodating the size of the download. Over the years our clients have overwhelmingly been appreciative of our many unaltered large pixel photos posted in our ads and our feedback has been that it is very rare that a dealer will post all but the most flattering of professionally finished photographs. We prefer to post the many photos taken of the car, n sometimes unflattering but natural sunlight, n order for our prospective buyers to be able to see true and reliable images of the car advertised and that is the reason for some seemingly duplicated shots. We trust you will agree.
West Coast Classics are proud to present an exceptionally rare barn-fresh (garage really!) find of an all original southern California, oasting its original 'Black License Plates', 967 Avanti II 2 door coupe with factory options including power steering, lectric clock, eater and defroster, ir conditioning, ower windows, enter console with its original Borg Warner automatic transmission and a floor shifter and the 327/300HP 4 BBL V8 (same as 1967 Corvette) engine!
The 1963-64 Studebaker Avanti was amongst the most daring of 1960's American cars, modern masterpiece which still seems contemporary today! Built with modern safety features such as a built in roll bar, added interior and door latches that became structural body members when closed! A supercharged 289 V8 made the car one of the fastest cars built in its day with a top speed of over 168mph - a staggeringly fast speed for a production street car! Some 29 Bonneville speed records were set by a supercharged Avanti. This was also the first major fiberglass body four passenger car and also the first such car to use caliper style disc brakes and anti-sway bars front and rear. With only 3,834 models built in 1963 and even less, 09 in 1964, his car was to prove an instant collectible and has since reached certified 'Milestone Status'. Distinctive features abound such as a grille-less front end, symmetrically placed hood bulge, haped windows with large glass areas, short rounded tail end, ircraft-like cockpit instrumentation and controls, lim section bucket seats and a padded roll bar.
To Studebaker's delight and not surprisingly, he public loved the car as it was both upscale and well equipped, lthough it sported a base price of $4,445 compared to the Corvette Sting Ray's $4,252. In the end, he main problem for the original Avanti, as the fact that the public knew that its parent company, tudebaker, as fast going out of business and therefore were reluctant to purchase their cars. Upon seeing it close its South Bend plant on December 20th 1963 and with the last 1964 Avanti having barely come off the production line, ts fate was sealed. Studebaker moved production of its other models to Canada in 1965 and only Chevy engines were offered in 1965-66. The renown 'Studebaker Motor Company' which had been incorporated in 1968 and founded in 1852 as a wagon producer, adly folded in March 1966.
In later years, eing too good to let die, he Avanti model continued with Chevy Corvette V8's after two South Bend Studebaker dealers, ate Altman and Leo Norman bought all the rights to the model, ormed the 'Avanti Motor Company' and continued to hand-build the cars in an old Studebaker plant with the cars being known as 'Avanti II's. After Altman's death in the mid 1970's the Altman estate sold the operation to another entrepreneur in 1982, ho continued the passion of building the car and so it was for years to come, ntil finally the recession of 1991 doomed the car to history.
This is a rare mostly all stock example, ith only two southern California owners since new and with all original service records and documentation since new! It was originally sold in 1967 to a Woodland Hills, A owner who sold the car in 5/1973 to only its second southern California owner who owned the car until we purchased it from him in 2015. The car has been sitting covered in his garage for many years, eing used only very infrequently, nd always having been superbly maintained mechanically. The car will be sold with a thick file of service records from new showing that at no time was any expense spared on this particular vehicles preventive maintenance - literally pages and pages of service records showing the cars extensive service history.
Obviously, eing a fiberglass car, he body has no rust and the floor boards and trunk area are also completely original, olid and rust free. Please note that the car does have some minor paint chips and scratches as can be seen in the pictures, rom its many years of being maneuvered around by its family owners, n a packed garage whilst in storage. The car seems to have it's completely original interior, ith the front seats and the interior in remarkably good condition throughout. The 327/300HP 4 BBL V8 engine is extremely strong and powerful and the transmission shifts smoothly through all the gears, simply lovely car to drive.
This is a rare opportunity to own a very rare and internationally desirable 1967 legendary Studebaker Avanti II with only two California owners since new and factory AC! A perfect candidate for the Avanti enthusiast to be able to enjoy and drive whilst restoring completely or simply a great addition for any American classic car collector to add to their collection!
