Description

Rocket Car, Autocycle, Car, Motorcycle...call it what you will, this is one rare and unusual beast that attracts crowds wherever it goes. This vehicle is number 198 of the 347 manufactured in Owosso, Michigan from about 1982-1988. These were designed by noted aircraft designer Jim Bede who designed the remarkably similiar flying car driven by Roger Moore in the Bond film, Octopussy. It was the first car marketed to go 100 mph and get 100 mpg...not sure if it does either, but I drove it comfortably at 65 mph with my wife in the back seat. This example is a two owner car, purchased new by a judge in Iowa in 1987, and enjoyed by us since August, 2014. The paint and interior are in great condition with only a few minor scratches. The metallic blue finish is believed to be original and is nicely contrasted by the tan interior which features tandem seating. The pics show some detail of a few minor blemishes which do not detract from the overall impression of the car. Some of the body fasteners are stripped, but these are easily replaced with more modern or industrial looking hardware. The car can be driven with the sliding canopy fully open, fully closed, or anywhere in between. The glass windshield is in very nice condition, as is the original plexi-glass canopy. Finding an original example with these in this condition is rare.It is powered by the original 400 cc Yamaha XS400RJ two cylinder, 4 stroke engine with a sequential shifter. It has travelled under 7,000 original miles. The car had 5,832 original miles on it when we bought it. The odometer now reads 6,104, but I believe that it would be more accurate to say closer to 7000 miles as the odometer stopped working shortly after we bought it. Parts are available from most Yamaha dealers for the engine components and there is an active collectors club that can help with any other parts. There is a new battery and the twin carbs are freshly cleaned and re-built.I invite and welcome inspections. The car is registered in Florida but is located near Port Huro, Michigan, about an hour from Detroit. The car is for pick up only, or I can deliver it to Reliable Transport's depot in Canto, Michigan. The transportation costs are the sole responsibility of the buyer. This is a fun, attention-getting vehicle that starts and runs well. It is, however, 30 years old, so I make no warranties whatsoever. Buyers must acknowledge that they are buying it in as-is condition. The car is available to U.S. residents only. If you have zero or low feed back, please do not bid without first contacting me 519-332-2530.
