1965 Hillman Super Minx Estate - NO RESERVE
I sold this car in the spring to a fellow who was recently diagnosed with a serious illness. As a favor, I purchased the car back from him. He did some work on the car and I’ve continued to putter on it but it’s obvious I can’t work on cars anymore. That’s why I sold it in the first place! So, here it is again. It’s a cool old car and about as rare as it gets. If you’re good with wood, make it a woodie, that’s what I would have done.
The car is a rock solid example of a very rare wagon, it starts, runs, drives and stops and would take little to certify mechanically. Being a Hillman the mechanical parts are easy to come by as they are for the most part common to the Sunbeam Alpine of that year and are available at Sunbeam suppliers in the US. Other parts are common with other British cars or available from UK suppliers. The Super Minx was made at the same time they made the Hillman Husky and the Sunbeam Alpines and Tigers. I’ve collected Hillman for many years and this Super Minx Estate is one of the rarest models I’ve found.
This car originally came out of the Washington D.C area. It still has a Dealer Sticker from Bethesda Maryland on the tailgate and one of the Stars and Stripes on the side window. The owner must have been a real traveler because there are stickers on the tailgate from places as far apart as North Carolina and South Dakota! That probably explains the rear axle having been exchanged for one from a later Sunbeam Alpine which probably gave it higher speeds and better economy.
The engine is in excellent condition and runs well. It’s recently had a full tune-up including plugs, points, condenser, distributor cap and wires. The fuel tank has been removed, cleaned, relined and repainted. With the fresh tank I installed all new fuel lines and had the carburetor rebuilt. The brakes were fully serviced with new wheel cylinders, new shoes in the back and new rotors and calipers in the front. The brake master cylinder was also rebuilt. The tires were replaced and the wheels were all repainted. The drive shaft was recently refurbished with new universal joints(MGB), end stock seal and yoke(Alpine). The hydraulic clutch system was rebuilt with a new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. It needs an emergency brake handle and some electrics need sorting but the headlights, etc, all work. Even the interior dome light works when the door is opened!
The interior is completely original and in remarkable condition. There is a cut in the driver’s seat. The pictures show the interior faults quite well. The seats will need re-padding and it needs a very good cleaning. The roof lining is quite serviceable as a driver. There are lots of pictures in the link.
Mostly, the car needs paint and a bit of bodywork, the paint is original from the plant. Clear coat it and give it the ‘rat’ look if you like. There’s virtually no rust underneath and no holes in the floors. The rockers had been replaced when I got it. Most of what needs to be done is bodywork on the right rear passenger door which looks to have been hit along the front edge. The right front fender has some minor body damage from a bump. One of the hinges on the bottom tail-gate needs a weld repair.
The exhaust leaks badly, which you’ll hear in the video. You’ll also see a picture of a complete NOS exhaust system which comes with the car. I also have spare glass for both rear side windows and the rear tail-gate window. The existing windows are fine, it just came with spares! All the rest of the glass is good and the windows all work. Any missing or damaged side trim has been replaced and comes with the car.
The car is located in Brampton Ontario, Canada a one hour drive to Niagara Falls NY, I have a valid Ontario title, importation into the US will not be an issue, talk to your US customs people.
