Noted industrial designer Brooks Stevens has designed a number of interesting cars over the years none more exciting than his own Excalibur. Using the 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK as inspiration creator Mr. Stevens launched his Excalibur in 1964. Originally using a Studebaker chassis and engine Stevens was able to fulfill his dream of making a new car with classic 30’s styling. He was quoted as saying “”I wanted this to be a replica [for those] that could not play in the collector’s market even then [and for those who wanted] a “two-way classic’ something that you can be sure will get you back home…” Unfortunately Studebaker ceased production thus Stevens was forced to change chassis and engine supplier. Mr. Stevens fortunately had friends in General Motors was able to convinced them into supplying Corvette chassis and powertrain combinations for use in these unique automobiles.
Painted in a crisp red with orange and off-red pin stripping and accents this car is truly something special. Overall the paint is in very good condition but does show some signs of age with only minor imperfections. On the front louvers and fenders the paint is starting to “spider-web” very lightly and there are the typical road use marks too. Around the door hinges small cracks and chips are starting to appear as well very typical for these cars. Meeting America’s modern safety regulations the Series II has shock mounted front and rear bumpers; both of which are in excellent condition. The majority of the chrome and stainless steel found on the front grille horns lights trim and luggage rack is in fantastic condition with the only blemish being rub marks on the stainless steel grille. The black vinyl hardtop is in great condition it seals well and has only very minor signs of wear. This top is fully removable and comes complete with a top boot full tonneau cover full weather side curtains and a cover for the trunk in the rear. This awesome Phaeton has numerous configurations and does them all well.
The interior is soft black leather that is in great condition no rips or tears or signs of major wear. Unique to this example are the addition of high back bucket seats which have a fold-able headrest for added comfort. A majority of the interior hardware was donated from the C3 Corvette too; including the steering column pedals gauges drive selector heater and air conditioning. All of those Corvette parts are in great condition with minor signs of use.
Under the hood you’ll find a massive 454 cubic inch big block Chevy engine that is mated to an automatic Turbo 400 transmission which is shifted through the floor. The iconic exhaust pipes coming out either side of the hood are completely functional and allow the big motor to breathe freely. This Excalibur has power steering power 4-wheel disc brakes and air conditioning. The car sits upon a set of chrome wire wheels wrapped snug in newer 225/70R15 BF Goodrich white wall tires that look great. The dual side mounts also have the same wire wheels and tires too.
