Description
This 1942 Packard is the barn find of all barn finds - still in the hands of the original farming family, photos and family history to accompany the car, and best of all, stored indoors - literally, in the barn - and carefully maintained. It still carries almost all of its original paint, its original interior, and original engine and all of its 1942 specific components like the 1 year only hubcaps and side grilles. . There is Meyer Ponteprino to our left, the original owner of the car, on the family driveway in Placentia, California. Next to him is his sister Perina and his brother Henry. This must have been very close to the time Meyer sold the car to Henry, since Meyer was going in the service. This is the very driveway we drove the car from just a little while ago! Their Parents came over from Italy in the first part of the 20th century, and put down roots in agricultural Orange County, CA. They built this farmhouse and barn around 1927, and had extensive avocado groves. Today the surrounding area is all industrial buildings, a freeway, and homes, but back then it was all open space and groves. It's hard to imagine how much change that farmhouse saw over the last 89 years! . The new 1942 Packard in the driveway of the Ponteprino family farmhouse. The Ponteprinos were very successful avocado farmers, and Meyer Ponteprino even got a U.S. Plant Patent # 1,080 for "A new and distinctive variety of Avocado tree" on March 25, 1952. Meyer lived until the mid 1980's, and his brother, Henry Ponteprino, owned the Packard until his recent passing. Henry continued to keep the car safe and indoors, and he kept the maintenance work up on it. Within the last couple of years, he had the car serviced with new brakes and coolant hoses, and restored gas tank, among other things. . So when we were introduced to the car, it looked like this - dusty and dirty, but it was under a dry roof and had a cover. Closer inspection revealed original paint. Because of the obvious service work that had been done, we thought it might wake up and live! And Live it did! . What a find! It's not too often you see a car undisturbed by the ages, yet carefully preserved and still in amazingly good condition! . I really liked the initials on the door - M E P - Meyer E. Ponteprino! . As you saw in the video, the car woke up very nicely, with just gasoline and a battery, and ran and drove the 2 miles from the farmhouse to the showroom! And it ran and drove sweetly too, with good power from the engine, smooth clutch operation, and nice brakes. It was a joy to fire that car up and put it on the road for the first time in a very long time! . Amazing. As befits a California car, the sheetmetal is beautiful, solid and rust free as can be! . The fender side grilles changed from vertical to horizontal in the abbreviated 1942 model year, which ran from August 25, 1941 to February 7, 1942. Only 11,325 of the '42 110 cars were made of ALL body styles, making this a very rare car indeed. This car is a Model 202, type 1589 "Coupe-Convertible" with 122" wheelbase. We'll see the number 1589 below in the photo of the original factory data plate on the cowl. . That's the factory original data plate. . The Fenderskirts are a terrific factory accessory! . Great lines on this car! . This car is just a sweetie - even the headlights still work! . Notice the working license light, and tail lights. And that 1973 DMV sticker on the black license plate. The black plate would have been issued in 1963, that's when the Black / Gold plate was introduced. . And there are both tail lights bright and working! . There's the rare '42 only Hubcap - with the same dual groove edge we saw in '47 through '50, but with a different Packard logo / hexagon center. . Not sure of the age of the tires, but they look like they have hardly any miles! . That's the actual original interior, with correct pattern and double stitching. Sure it's got some splits and cracks, but it's amazingly good. The new owner might choose to have it conserved with a fabric backing to prevent further splitting. . The dashboard is remarkably nice, as is the rare and desirable Packard Deluxe Steering wheel! The family told me Henry bought the steering wheel not terribly long ago. . Dashboard, gauges and plastic are remarkably nice! All of the instruments work except for the gasoline gauge. The 69,142 miles showing are believed to be the original miles. . The ashtray and ashtray surround plastic shows some drying, but still amazing for originals. the radio push knobs are deteriorated. . Original and amazingly good! . The rear seat, all original, with added seat belts. . The originality of this car is breathtaking. . Here's the trunk - with agricultural canvas bags protecting it. Notice the brand new in the bag 1942 Packard Hubcap tucked in back - it's a little bit pitted, but I loved the idea that Meyer wanted to make sure he always had a spare hubcap! . There's the Packard six cylinder engine, with correct for 1942 "E" prefix on the engine serial number. . There's the right side of the engine, with proper air cleaner, new coolant hose, and, another cylindrical thing, let's take a look. . It's a "Luber-Finer", an aftermarket oil filter. One so large it looks like it might be for a truck! . It's a great engine - it's smooth, it is very quiet, fires right up, and runs great! . It looks to me like there was some body repair on the right rear section, you can see evidence of it to the left of the tail light. . the right front fender also looks like it was spotted in. . Jack stand, jack and tools. Note the instructional pictures on the tag. . Let's take a look at the undercarriage, extremely solid and original, as a southern California car since new should be! The only rust I could find was on the battery carrier. Otherwise, it's all original, solid, and un-rusted sheetmetal. Also note the presence of the engine bay splash pans, which often don't survive. . Looking at the reconditioned gas tank, with original solid sheetmetal just behind it. Amazingly good! . Recent brake hoses and wheel cylinders. . Super solid and original frame - and look how nice the runningboard sheetmetal is ! . And the often-missing inner rear fender spray deflector! . A tremendous find, worthy of continued preservation! Offered by the Vault Classic Cars Dealership, Fullerton, CA, call us at 714-401-1047 International customers are welcome to buy!
