Introduced in the fall of 1936, the 15th Series, 1937 Packard Twelve received several upgrades from the 1936 14th series models. The most significant was the change from a solid front axle to independent front suspension and a new, hydraulic braking system, which replaced the outdated mechanical brakes. Only 1,300 Packard Twelves were built for the 1937 model year and the bulk of those produced were sedans. The 1507 series Packard’s were built on the long 139 ¼” wheelbase chassis and were powered by the 473.3 cid/ 175 horsepower, twelve cylinder engine.
From a prominent, private collection, we are proud to offer this extremely rare and well restored, 1937 Packard Twelve Series 1507 Coupe Roadster. This vehicle was once part of the Zach Brinkeroff collection and was purchased by the current owner about twenty years ago. Upon purchasing this very complete and authentic example, the owner commissioned noted Packard restorer, Mark Clayton Restorations of Castle Rock, Colorado, to complete a frame off restoration that was completed in 1998. After the restoration was completed, the vehicle was entered into Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) judging was it was given its National First Junior, Senior, and Premier Award (#2466). Since the restoration was completed, this car has been consistently maintained and stored in a museum like environment. It has been driven approximately 800 miles since the restoration was completed and today is in excellent, restored condition.
The Packard maroon paint remains in good overall condition showing only the expected signs of aging and wear that one would expect from an older restoration. The paint has a consistent and strong overall gloss and presents extremely well. The overall fit and finish of the body panels is excellent. The doors fit the body with even gaps and margins and the hood aligns properly with the front grill assembly and cowl. The interior and rumble seat compartment have been completely refinished in a period correct, taupe leather, which also remains in very nice condition as does the tan, canvas top. The wood grained dashboard retains all of its original gauges, which have been properly restored and are in working condition. All of the glass was replaced at the time of restoration and remain in like new condition. The chrome is in excellent condition and is free of oxidation or wear.
The engine bay and chassis show little signs of use and are clean and presentable. The original engine (#906659) starts easily, idles well and easily propels the car down the road at modern, highway speeds. The transmission shifts easily, the brakes and steering are tight and responsive.
This desirable 15th Series Packard Twelve retains its important and original data plate, which shows the vehicle as car number 1039258. This number, stamped on its original tag, proves that this car was always a body style #1039 coupe roadster and it is the 58th coupe roadster body built during the 1937 model year. The firewall has the embossed Packard id number of 365172.
The car is equipped with desirable Packard options and accessories including dual side-mounted spare tires with metal covers and mirrors, a rear Packard script luggage rack, a radio, front Trippe driving lights and the Packard Cormorant radiator mascot.
This is a great opportunity to obtain a proper, authentic and correctly restored Packard Twelve Coupe roadster that is ready to be displayed or driven on long distance tours. Please email Dave Weber at Dave@stlouiscarmuseum.com to schedule an inspection and test drive. Thank you very much.
