I recently brought this car home along with a nearly complete parts car. With four Peugeots currently spilling out of my driveway, though, I need to let some go. The parts car will be stripped and scrapped, but this extraordinary wagon has been a regular driver since new, and it deserves to remain on the road.
This car just completed a 700-mile drive from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to the annual Citroën Rendezvous in Saratoga Springs, New York, and finally to my home in Arlington, Virginia. We experienced not a single issue despite 90-degree weather and typical city traffic along I-87 and I-95. The gauges held within the proper range, and the fans cycled on and off as they should. When I say the air conditioning blows cold, I mean COLD. The system was converted to R134A and the condenser is all copper.
While most Peugeots in the northeast have long since rusted away, this car benefited from winters spent in Florida, away from salted roads. Cosmetics are not perfect, but the structure is absolutely sound. I have included pictures of the underbody to show its condition. There are two small spots of surface rust on the exterior: one by the left rear wheel well, and one on the left front fender. There is also a light crease in the front fender near the same spot, but it is slight enough that I didn't even notice it for several days. The tailgate had failing clearcoat and some slight rust bubbles here and there, but I just happened to have a tailgate in the exact same color from another car I parted out, so I swapped it over and now this car looks like a perfectly respectable driver. The roof and hood have been resprayed somewhat cheaply and could use a coat of clear, but overall it shows well. The European headlights dramatically improve the car's looks, but if the buyer is interested in originality, I have several pairs or North American lights in decent shape and will throw in a pair for free.
Inside, the seats are in immaculate condition. This car has the rare three-row arrangement that seats eight, all facing forward. The second row tumbles forward, and the third row folds almost flat. These seats were removed for some time to allow greater hauling capacity, so they avoided abuse. Even the driver's seat bolster is in exceptional condition with no damage. There are three ashtrays, but none of them has ever been used so far as I can tell. The headliner is in very good condition from front to back. The worst flaw in the interior is the dashboard. The prior owner was apparently fond of accessories, and drilled holes here and there to mount them. Fortunately, the aforementioned parts car did not suffer the same modification, and if desired I will include that dash at no extra charge. The holes are small, however, and would be nearly imperceptible with some black silicone filler. Both the upper and lower glove compartments are in good condition and latch properly. The soft rubber cover on the shifter is coming off, but that's happened on pretty much all of these cars.
There is some smoke at startup, but it clears in seconds and does not appear while driving. The oil appears clean after at least 700 miles, and there was no discernible change in the oil level. Smoke is probably due to slight valve guide wear, which is simply not worth addressing when there is no indication of a serious problem. There are no signs of the notorious cylinder head cracks that befall the turbo motors with higher mileage. The cylinder head was resurfaced at 130k and a new head gasket installed. This car was driven gently by an elderly owner for most of its life. There is bound to be some oil seepage somewhere, but rest assured that I have not gone to any lengths to cover it up. I would rather present the car honestly than hide the issues.
Power accessories are in working order save for the cruise control and the heated seats. All four windows go up and down very well. The central locking system works. There is a cracked keyless entry fob in the glovebox, but I have not tried it. I just discovered that the horn doesn't work, but I have a spare switch and spare horns, so I'll try to sort that out.
Other pros:Custom exhaust installed Fall 2015Bridgestone tires installed at 160k still in excellent condition.Tie rod ends, brake rotors and pads at 155kNew water pump at 150kPropeller shaft u-joint replacedRadiator replaced
Other cons:Blower motor does not turn off and occasionally chirps. Replacement blower motor is included.Heated seats are nonfunctionalShifter is a bit vague, but once in gear all is well
This is a rare and marvelous car, and I would not hesitate to fly in and drive it home. I am happy to pick up buyers at DCA, IAD, or BWI. I have a growing collection of spare parts if you're interested in taking some with you.
A $500 deposit will be required within 3 days of auction end. I am somewhat flexible on pickup date, but I would like to complete delivery by the end of July.
