History of the 1964 GTO

The Pontiac GTO is an American automobile built by Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1964 to1974. The first generation GTO was a muscle car classic of the 1960s and 1970s era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, he Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models.

The first Pontiac GTO was an option package for the Pontiac LeMans, vailable with the two-door coupe, ardtop coupe, nd convertible body styles. The US$295, ackage included a 389ci V8 rated at 325hp at 4800rpm with a single Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, hromed valve covers and air cleaner, -blade clutch fan, floor-shifted three-speed manual transmission with Hurst shifter, tiffer springs, arger diameter front sway bar, ider wheels with 7.5014 redline tires, ood scoops, nd GTO badges. Optional equipment included a four-speed manual, uper Turbine 300 two-speed automatic transmission, ore powerful "Tri-Power" carburetion rated at 348hp, etallic drum brake linings, imited-slip differential, eavy-duty cooling, ide and handling package, nd the usual array of power and convenience accessories.
