This is my 1968 Firebird 400 which was sold new in Washington State where salt is not used on the roads so it is virtually rust free. It has 63,586 original miles with one repaint and otherwise very original. The vinyl top is original and still looks excellent. The interior is completely original including carpet, door sill plates with rivets, brake/accelerator pedal pads, etc and in excellent condition. The dash pad, console, door panels, etc. have no cracks, marks or scratches. All of the glass is original including the outside mirror. The car has a replacement carb, but I have a nice 1968 400 Firebird automatic carb to go with the car. The original washer pump is installed, but there is a small aftermarket washer pump added to the car. I have not had time to restore the original pump. After last tax season (I am a CPA), the gas gauge did not work, and I have not yet run down the connection that needs to be cleaned. The car also has a repo front bumper. The original AC still blows cool air and has its original sticker on the AC compressor. Except for the carb, the drivetrain is totally original including the air cleaner, intake, heads, "born with" matching block, valve covers, idle stop solenoid, heat riser shroud, bolts, nuts, washers, transmission, drive shaft, rear end, etc, etc, etc. I doubt the engine has ever been apart so I suggest that the timing chain be replaced at some point. Correct 14X6 Rally II wheels are not original but go with the car. The original deluxe wheel covers are included and have nice red centers as can be seen in the picture. In the link, I have also included a picture of some parts that I will let go--repo vacuum kit, some clips, rubber parts and an NOS master cylinder cap. An all cotton car cover is also included.
The original owner was an attorney in Washington State. He kept the car until his death, and his widow sold it. The next owner kept the car a very short time and sold it in 1996 to David Carthum who lives in Centralia, Washington. David is/was an elementary school principal. He kept a log from 1996 that I have in the car which shows 57,885 miles in 1996 when he got the car. It had just turned 62,000 (or was about to turn) when I got it so you can see how few miles I drove it over 10+ years because it now has 63,586. I just wanted to take it to drive in car shows and displays. I have pictures of the car from around 1996 with the original wheel covers and white wall tires on the car--just as it came from the factory. It looks very nice that way.
I like to show my old Pontiacs. My other Pontiac is a 1969 GTO Judge that my Dad bought for me in 1979 when I was 19. I am now 56. It is the same type of car--all original with some repainting and replating of some chrome and some bolts/washers. It had 72,000 miles in 1979 and has 89,000 now. That is 459 miles a year, but it was my every day car for 1979, 1980 and half of 1981. In the middle of 1981, it became my collector car. And I would keep this Bird if my time was not so stretched.
This Firebird has been in an enclosed garage and covered most of its life. I included a couple of pictures under the car. One of the pictures shows that the plate under the engine is not bent from having a jack placed under it. Most Firebirds are bent in this area. The other picture shows most of the underbody. If you took the exhaust system off the car, there is virtually no rust in the car. The subframe and floors are rust free with the original factory paint on them. I also have pictures of the bottoms of the quarter panels with the factory welds visible and clean paint. The carhas traveled less than 100 miles per year for many years. Ten years ago, I traveled from North Carolina to Washington State to buy this Pontiac due to its originality and excellent condition. It was brought across the country in an enclosed trailer. I have only used alcohol free gas mixed with real lead and engine oil containing zinc with additional zinc added at each oil change. (The oil is due to be changed.) I am as picky as anyone in the country when it comes to maintaining an old Pontiac.
I have the PHS Automotive Services info for the car which shows its options. The options include: 400 4 BBL V8 (includes chrome air cleaner/rocker covers/oil cap, dual exhaust, declutching fan, hood scoops, chrome “hockey sticks” in grill, arrow head on front bumper), Hydra-Matic Transmission, AM Radio, Deluxe Wheel Discs, Deluxe Steering Wheel, Console, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Soft Ray Glass—all windows, Bucket Seat Adjuster (extremely rare and works), Custom Air Conditioning, Vinyl Top.
I entered it in one judged show at the General Greene Greensboro NC Chapter of AACA where it won a First. It would not win gold at a POCI convention because the engine has never been out to be detailed, the underside and exhaust are not like new--just clean and rust free--except for the exhaust system and every bit of the paint is not perfect. I am unsure if this is the original exhaust on the car.
I am ambivalent about selling the car, but I need more time to complete some work on my other Pontiac. Also, I am a CPA, and my wife and I have two young children, one of whom is autistic, so my time for the cars is not great.
If you want an original low mileage authentic great driving Firebird, you will not be disappointed. The original interior has a nice smell when you get in, and the steering is still tight. The car can be seen in Kernersville, North Carolina by appointment.
Here is a very short video of the engine running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMXjO91wI-0
And here is a link to additional pictures showing the underside, door sill plates, console, rear of car, data plate, correct carb, some date codes that I could get, PHS Automotive Services documents and the parts included with the car.http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5592064&posted=1#post5592064 I had trouble getting the data plate pic to load and will try to get that posted later or take another pic.
