If you're looking for GTO looks on a budget, his 1972 Pontiac Lemans Sport convertible definitely delivers. The body shell is, f course, he same, nd it still packs a potent, reshly-rebuilt 350 so it'll run with a genuine Goat without breaking a sweat. Looks good, oes fast, osts less, ow can you lose? The paint job was done a few years ago, ut the gorgeous code 56 Monarch Yellow finish is holding up quite well and combined with the black interior and top, t looks a bit formal on the sleek Lemans bodywork. Fit and finish are quite good with doors that close more easily than just about any other GM car of the period we've experienced, ndicative of both quality workmanship and a solid car that hasn't been bent or rusty. The Sport was a lot more GTO than most would believe, ncluding an Endura front bumper and hood scoops for an aggressive look. There's not a lot of trim on the Lemans, ut details like the '350' emblems on the rocker panels, he neat little vent behind the front wheels, nd the familiar chrome rear bumper all look to be in good shape. Yes, omeone has added GTO emblems front and rear, ut given the similarities, hat can be forgiven. After all, ho hasn't dreamed of a GTO ragtop in their garage at some point or another? Dressed to play, he black bucket seat interior is just as functional and inviting as any in a GTO. The seat covers show minimal wear and it's quite possible that things like the door panels and dash pad are originals, ith the back seat looking almost like new. This Lemans offers only basic instrumentation, ut the three gauge pod layout still looks sporty and the woodgrained appliques look warm and inviting. The cool 3-spoke wheel looks aftermarket but is the optional sport wheel, nd the center console houses a shifter that now manages the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission underneath. There is factory air that now uses R134a refrigerant, nd the original radio has been dumped in favor of a newer Panasonic AM/FM/CD stereo unit that sounds pretty good in the vintage ragtop. The trunk is correctly finished with spatter paint, hat might be the original mat, nd a full-sized spare with cover. The engine is the original, umbers-matching Pontiac 350 that seems to ignore the declining horsepower in the early 1970s. It's nicely detailed with corporate turquoise engine enamel, 4-barrel carburetor, nd original air cleaner up top. The great thing is that everything looks factory because it is. It starts quickly and easily, dles with a throaty V8 burble, nd moves easily with a solid whack of low-end torque. It's backed by a new TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear end out back, o the powertrain is certainly durable enough to have fun without worries. A recent dual exhaust system with original-style mufflers gives it a mellow soundtrack, nd the correct Rallye II wheels won't raise any eyebrows with purists, ven with 225/70/14 front and 235/60/14 rear Goodyear radials wrapped around them.If you don't care about pedigrees and investments and just want to get to the business of having fun, his very neatly finished Lemans is your car.
