1988 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2L G50 Cabriolet Grand Prix White, -Speed G50 Transmission Great Driver
Carrera 3.2 (1984–1989)
With the 911's future ensured, 984 saw the launch of a replacement for the successful SC series. It was the model year 1984 911 3.2 Carrera, eviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. The 911 3.2 Carrera was the last iteration in the original 911 series, ith all subsequent models featuring new body styling with new brake, lectronic and suspension technologies.
A new higher-displacement motor, 3.2-litre horizontally opposed flat 6-cylinder, as utilized. At the time Porsche claimed it was 80% new. The new swept volume of 3164 cc was achieved using the 95 mm (3.7 in) bore (from the previous SC model) combined with the 1978 Turbo 3.3 crankshaft's 74.4 mm (2.9 in) stroke. In addition, igher domed pistons increased the compression ratio from 9.8 to 10.3:1 (9.5:1 for the US market). New inlet manifold and exhaust systems were fitted. The 915 transmission was carried over from the SC series for the first three model years. In 1987, he Carrera got a new five-speed gearbox sourced from Getrag, odel number G50 with proven BorgWarner synchronizers. This slightly heavier version also featured a hydraulically operated clutch.
With the new engine, ower was increased to 207 bhp (154 kW; 210 PS) (@ 5900 rpm) for North American-delivered cars. Factory times were more modest: 0–60 mph time of 6.3 seconds for the US version.
The brake discs were increased in size to aid in more effective heat dissipation and improved oil-fed chain tensioners were fitted to the engine. To improve oil cooling, finned cooler replaced the serpentine lines in the front passenger fender well. This was further improved in 1987, ith the addition of a thermostatically controlled fan.
Driving refinement and motor reliability were improved with an upgrade of the fuel and ignition control components to an L-Jetronic with Bosch Motronics 2 DME (Digital Motor Electronics system). An improvement in fuel-efficiency was due to the DME providing a petrol cut-off on the overrun. Changes in the fuel map and chip programming from October 1986 further improved the power to 217 bhp (162 kW; 220 PS) (@ 5900 rpm) for North American delivered cars as well as for other markets mandating low emissions, ike Germany.
Three basic models were available – coupé, arga and cabriolet. The Carrera is almost indistinguishable from the SC with the external clue being the front fog lights that were integrated into the front valance. Only cosmetic changes were made during the production of the Carrera, ith a redesigned dash featuring larger air conditioning vents appearing in 1986.

This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet has been in British Columbia since at last 1992. It runs and drives very well and appears to have been kept up mechanically throughout it’s life on the road. We aren’t very clear on its precise ownership history. It appears to have been driven regularly. The current mileage breaks down to just undre 15,000 miles per year. This Carrera Cabriolet came from the factory with a long list of options including Sports Steering Wheel with Elevated Hub, ports Seats Left and Right, orged Light Metal Wheels in Grand Prix White, eadlight washers, larm, utomatic Speed Control, ower Seats, igh intensity windshield washer, nd a Monterey Radio (which is no longer with the car). As with any vehicle of this age and mileage, t shows signs of wear and tear.
The photographs show condition accurately. Please note that we’ve included photos of any visible defects in paint. Don’t miss your chance to get an aircooled 911. Carproof report shows several insurance claims for theft of contents and damage to vehicle - common with convertibles in Vancouver. It is on a clean and clear “normal” BC Registration/title. This would make an excellent driver or a fun project to either restore to as-new condition or “backdate” as many people have been doing with the 3.2L Carrera cars.
These late 80s 911s are increasingly desirable as they represent the last iteration of the original “911” design and model designation. The 87-89 series 3.2L cars equipped with the Getrag G50 5-Speed are the most desirable of that model type. They are excellent driving cars with plenty of power. Fully restored and/or well-preserved, ow mileage late 1980s 911s are nearing six-digit sums. Don’t miss your chance to own a G50 Cabiolet!
It was a Canadian delivery car, hich is identical to USA delivery cars except instruments are in metric. When sold to the USA we have the speedometer and odometer re-calibrated and certified to USA standards.
