Just when you thought all the good barn finds were gone...Recently discovered in a dry Michigan barn, s this amazing, riginal 1967 Porsche 912 coupe.
With just 108,000 miles from new (odo reads 8,351, as rolled over once, nd still functions properly), he engine on this car was reportedly rebuilt approximately 4,000 miles ago, y the long term owner (a mechanic). While there still may be some sorting and additional freshening to do for optimum performance, his 912 starts right up and runs quite well!
Originally Aga blue (color code 6608), his 912 was resprayed at some point, o a similar (& attractive) shade, ut definitely lighter than the original (it's sort of a gun metal blue now). If one were to restore this beauty, hen a return to the original hue would be in order, ut I must say, he patina on this car is just fabulous. There are numerous imperfections and discolorations (most noticeable being the rear passenger quarter, here it looks as if something was spilled on the paint). There's a real honesty to the looks and life lived of this wonderful 912. And a great story to tell.
This is an original 5 gauge car. The interior is in very good shape. There are no cracks in the dash, nd the wood steering wheel (& dash plate) are in nice shape as well. And check out the dealer installed "Porsche A/C"! The carpets are older, ut ok. The seats are non-original, nd from a later (mid '70s, .7 era) 911. The floor pans (as evidenced in the pictures) are in excellent shape. There are even still the original dealer installed Porsche floor-mats.
The lights, ignals, ndicators, nd other major electrical components of the car are also in working order, on operational items are the gas gauge, lock, nd added oil pressure and voltage readouts.
The undercarriage of the 912 looks quite good too. As the photos detail, ost of the corrosion appears to be superficial in nature, nd the structural integrity of the car is excellent. The battery tray area, n the front storage compartment, ooks quite good as well.
The 912 starts right up, ith a pump of the (brand new) accelerator pedal, nd runs and idles nicely (see video link below). The original Solex carburetors work very well! One thing noticeable on a test drive, t's that the pedal cluster is a little sticky (primarily the clutch pedal), nd would perhaps benefit from a pedal cluster rebuild. That being said, think some good, egular use would go a long way, s the more it's driven, he more it loosens up. The brakes seem to function well, nd as intended.
I do not have the COA, r confirmation that this is the original engine, ut the engine code (see pic) 754297 does align with the build date & vin for what looks like a match.
Put simply, hile I would not recommend driving the car a long distance, ithout first going through all the mechanical systems, t is a car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed as it is being enhanced and freshened. In this age of 6 digit ($$$) early, ong hood Porsches, he days of the plentiful, ndiscovered barn finds are likely behind us. And as early 911s have risen to astronomical values, 12s are now following suit. This car will be 50 years old next year!
If you've seen the February issue of Sports Car Market (SCM) magazine, here is a great profile (& rebuttal) of the barn find Porsche Speedster that Jerry Seinfeld recently bought for over half a million dollars. His (valid) point, s that these cars are only original once, nd have a real story to tell of their life - much more so than an over restored car, hat has been rebuilt to better than new, nd consequently robbed of its history, tory and character. This is your chance to get one of the last real-deal, arn find cars, t a price that's sure to look very, ery cheap in very little time.
Here's a link to a short video of the car running (keep in mind, he temperature outside was less than 10 degrees when video was taken!):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6IY2UmdomU
I encourage all potential buyers to come inspect the car in personpriorto buying or bidding, nd please keep expectations realistic - this is an unrestored, 0 year old vehicle. Your bid or offer is a binding contract. Feel free to call me with any questions or for more information. Car condition is subjective. I have owned over 100 Porsches, nd am picky about my cars, ut potential owners should decide for themselves if this car is for them. Car is sold AS IS, HERE IS. Transportation is ultimately the responsibility of the buyer. International bidders are welcome, ut please have U.S. funds and transportation arranged prior to auction's end. Zero or negative feedback bidders please contact me prior to bidding or your bid may be cancelled. Please only bid or offer if you are serious.
