Description

Are you looking for that scarce 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa? This is it... a local survivor 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa. This has been stored in a garage for years. Below is a video collection of the vehicle in action:

This classic muscle car spent much of its life stored away and the right color combination. We also have the Porsche COA showing the engine number, color and options and it appears all the numbers match. In addition, it has a rare custom order interior color option only available in 1988 911s (Gray Beige). Cashmere was the standard 1986 beige interior which is a very different color. The 3.2-liter 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera debuted after a very successful run of 911SC models, built from 1978 to 1983. The Carrera was priced at $32,000 and shared most of its visual cues with its immediate predecessor, but had added power and performance, as well as other major updates. The cars came in coupe, open Cabriolet, and Targa body styles.
The main upgrade in the Carrera was the larger 3.2-liter flat six engine, which looked much like that of the 3.0 it replaced but was built of all-new parts. One crucial change was an improved timing chain tensioner, and Bosch Motronic fuel injection, which replaced the K-Jetronic system. The engine produced 200 horsepower and came with a Getrag five-speed manual transmission. This was enough to move the Carrera from 0 to 60 mph in about 5.5 seconds.

Condition Report:

This vehicle has been stored for years. It includes a clear title in my name, as well as the data plate and the original door sticker. It appears complete and original aside from possibly one repaint or partial repaint. The paint is excellent and we did not detect any overspray aside from part of one sway bar as shown.

The interior is complete but shows some wear consistent with a vehicle with 100,000 original miles. There is no broken glass but there are a few marks in the glass including two small stone chips in the windshield. It does not have the original Monterey AM FM radio but does have a period Alpine radio with special speakers and an amp under the seat. Other that those minor modifications, the interior appears to original. These can be easily reversed for the purist. We also found the exhaust system was replaced with a stainless steel exhaust as shown.

The floor pans, trunk and rocker panels are excellent as you can see. The doors, hood and trunk lid are also very nice. It is consistent with a vehicle that probably did not see a winter. The paint is nice but does show a number of small marks and nicks from age. We are unsure if it has been repainted and if it was, it was professionally done a fairly long time ago. We could find a few flaws from use but you had to look to find them.

Mechanically, it starts well and drives straight, and brakes as expected. The engine is smooth at higher RPMs but idle could be a bit smoother. It also has an intermittent slight miss. While it has had regular and recent oil and filter changes, It has not had a tuneup since 2008 and is probably due for one.

We are also unsure of the condition of the motor as far as a leak down test but we are guessing it is time to freshen up the motor given the age and miles. These are expensive to do unless you work on these or know someone that does. It could also benefit from fresh gasoline.

The clutch feels good and shifts through the gears effortlessly. The only issue we found is the 1st gear synchro is getting weak as you need to come to a stop to shift into 1st. No other issues were found. We would check the brakes as the brake pad light is on. No other warning lights are present. The brakes do work well. It is as smooth at 70 as 10-20 MPH. The steering is tight and there are very few rattles.

While you can see that the A/C and cruise control were removed when a previous owner was thinking of using the vehicle on the track and then stopped, all the parts appear to be with the car as shown in the photos. This includes the blowers, all tubes and hoses, dryer, compressor and brackets. Even NOS screws and other hardware are included.

Also note all the extra parts included. This includes earlier door panels many, many other parts and a multitude of manuals, Penn 20-50 racing oil and more. The original Fuchs Alloys are included as shown as well as the wheels and tires on the vehicle.

All the exterior lights function, the battery is nearly new, and the spare, jack and toolkit are present. Even the Porsche gloves, owners packet and COA are present. The gauges all function as do the lights, directionals, radio and horn.

To summarize, it is our opinion that this vintage Porsche 911 Carrera Targa would be a very nice addition to anyone's collection. This rare find would make a great project for the Porsche enthusiast, father and son or weekend mechanic.
