See our page above to view our collection of over 100 of the world's best collector cars. 1971 Porsche 914-6 Targa Since the demise of the 356 in 1965. Porsche relied on the 912 – essentially a 4-cylinder 911 – as its entry level model. But in spite of the 912 being a very good car. buyers saw it as a poor-man’s 911 rather than a genuinely good junior sports car. What Porsche really needed was an all-new car to attract young buyers to their showrooms. Concurrently. VW’s sporty flagship Karmann-Ghia was very expensive to build and due for replacement. Porsche’s Ferdinand Piech had the idea of a joint venture between the two companies; one sports car could be built and offered with the choice of flat-four or flat-six engines. VW would market and sell the 4-cylinder cars while the 6-cylinder cars would be sold as entry level Porsches. Porsche lacked the money to develop the car. so an old verbal agreement was brought into play that would see VW financing the tooling and manufacturing. As the 914 project was well into its development. the chairman of VW died. paving the way for a new chairman who had no such loyalty to an old handshake agreement. VW pulled the financial plug on the 914 and stuck Porsche with the bill to finish development and tooling of the sports car. causing the price to rise precariously close to that of the 911 and put the new 914 project on the back foot before it had even reached showrooms. While the 914 had a difficult gestation. it did prove to be a brilliant little car: Light. fuel efficient and even practical with two trunks and a removable roof panel for open-air motoring. The mid-engine design returned perfectly balanced handling and ultra-light steering. The six-cylinder. 2. 0 liter 914-6 saw major success in motorsports. and could have done more had it not come within striking distance of outperforming the 911. In spite of high prices and the stigma of being considered a rebadged VW when new. the 914 sold well between 1969 and 1976. with 118. 78 built. Today’s enthusiasts have finally recognized the 914 as a true Porsche and an all-time great driver’s car. with current values reflecting that newfound enthusiasm. This 1971 914-6 is one of only 3. 32 originally produced and is a desirable early chrome bumper example. This is a real 914-6 as confirmed by it’s Certificate of Authenticity. and has a correct 914-6 motor. although not the original engine for this car. A comprehensive restoration was started. but abandoned by the previous owner. It is a solid. rot and accident free shell that is largely complete. Bodywork has been started and the car is in primer. though it still needs some panel alignment and a once-over before being ready for paint. Exterior trim has been mostly removed and is included with the car. appearing to be in solid restorable condition. Most of the important components are still present – original fog lights. original Blaupunkt radio. removable roof panel. nice Fuchs wheels and even the original space-saver spare. Inside. the cockpit does require a full restoration but frame work is all present and restorable. The 2. 0 liter flat-six engine and 5-speed gearbox are complete but not currently installed. and the original exhaust and heat exchangers appear to be in good order. While it may not be possible to know that every single nut and bolt is still with the car. we can say with confidence that the original major components are present and accounted for. making this a rather straight forward project for any 914 enthusiast. Thanks to the increased popularity and value of 914s. in particular the six-cylinder cars. many new and reproduction parts are now available. making these great candidates for restoration.
