Description

This is a rare, irst-year production Porsche 912 with first-year 3-gauge dashboard and original 4-speed transmission.
The car was produced in late 1965, ut was titled in the US as a 1966 model (when the car arrived in the states). I purchased the vehicle in April of 1995 from a former co-worker at the time that had it stored in another former co-worker's barn for four years after having some bodywork performed on the car. The vehicle is presently painted Guards Red, ut according to the VIN the original color was Polo Red. As the original engine suffered from a crack in the engine case at the oil cooler mount and leaked oil profusely, immediately found and replaced the engine case with one from a 1967 German Gray Market 912 that I bought some parts from. I transferred all of the original engine parts and accessories to the 1967 engine case such as the generator, riginal Solex carburetors, ooling sheet metal, he US heat exchangers (replacement engine European heat exchangers and exhaust) and I installed a Bursch 4-into-2-into-1 header exhaust, he only non-standard engine equipment. Everything else on the engine is original, own to the original points distributor, -speed transmission, riginal chromed wheels with original chrome hub caps and brushed center caps. Original steering wheel, leaned and re-painted original gauges, nterior carpeting has been replaced but otherwise the interior is all original including one installed and one spare OPERATING original Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM/Shortwave radios. Front seats need rebuilding, ut are both completely functional. Trunk carpeting is original and shows its age. The original jack is present, ut not the toolkit.
The gaps between the body panels vary, nd passenger door gaps don't quite line up when its closed; however the door locks, s safe and is weather-proof. The previous owner of the vehicle told me that the body shop that he had replace the floor pans and repaint the car had the doors off when they cut the original floors out, nd as a result the body of the car slightly twisted. There is evidence of other body work on the passenger side of the vehicle, s the passenger side rear quarter panel lip is slightly thicker than the driver's side, he passenger door exhibits some repair work on the inside with the interior door panel removed, nd the passenger front fender has been replaced and is from a later year, aving holes for a reflector. The window felts need replacing, ut the original window mechanisms and door locks work fine.
The car is weather-proof, lthough I've never intentionally driven it in rain (and never in snow/winter months) it's been caught in rain perhaps 4 times during the 20 years that I've owned the vehicle. I literally have not washed the car for two years now; just carefully cleaned with dust brush and detailing spray.
There are a couple of scrapes and bumps, ut this car all-in-all is in very good preservation condition, aving been painted approximately 25 years ago. Electric system is original12 volt (not converted from 6v). I cleaned and applied POR15 to the floorpans twenty years ago, ut as you'll see from the pictures its time to repeat the process. The car has Pirelli P400 tires on all four corners with many thousands of miles left on them. The car was four-wheel aligned by an old, ocal body shop that was so proud of themselves that they all posed and took pictures of themselves with the car when the job was finished.
The cables for the heat exchangers are not presently installed, ut all parts come with the car and are easily installed to make the heating system operable. I honestly just never installed and connected the cables up, ut I did weld the heat exchangers around the Bursch Header Exhaust, o the necessary components are all present. Many spare/extra parts are included, rom manuals to the European Heat Exchangers, nbsp;nuts and bolts, o 1966-vintage Porsche literature and advertisements to an extra original working Blaupunkt US AM/FM/SW radio. Car also comes with an interior-only full cover, ra for the front-end, nd a floating battery charger. All stuff I've collected over the years for the car.
This is NOT a Concourse d'Elegance vehicle. The bottom end of the engine could use a rebuild as it burns a little oil on the highway and one of the pushrod tubes leaks a few drops of oil after shut off; but this is probably the most honest old car that you're going to find. I actually preferred that it was not in showroom condition because then, wasn't afraid to drive it. I have simply used and enjoyed the car for twenty years, nd now its time to let someone else learn from it and enjoy it. Literally the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned, t has ALWAYS started; even after sitting all winter long. I think I've balanced the carburetors and adjusted the valves maybe four times over twenty years. I've done oil changes each year or at 3k miles (whichever occurred first). All maintenance on this car has been performed by myself since I've owned it, nd literally every piece of this car has been in my hands at some point during the last twenty years. But the payback is a fantastic, eliable old car that gets decent fuel economy and turns heads wherever it goes. You'll need to learn to do some maintenance tasks on the car, s there are not many folks left that know the old Super 90 engines; and those that do are likely to charge premium fees. But truthfully, t's quite easy to work on (much like the old VWs of similar vintage.) This is a good car to learn how to "feel" machines with. Old school technology required one to "feel" the carbs on the engine, he 50 year old transmission, he factory 4 wheel manual disc brakes and the (very easy) manual steering. The reprint of the original owner's manual explains what was considered to be basic maintenance 50 years ago; things like setting the timing to changing spark plugs and light bulbs. All quite easy to accomplish with basic skills and tools. The engine runs just fine on premium unleaded fuel.
Car is sold in as-is condition with NO warranty implied or offered. Mileage quoted on the vehicle in this advertisement is from the odometer, nd assumed it "rolled" and reset to zero at some point in time. Actual mileage is unknown, can report only what I have put on the vehicle myself personally. Car is offered locally in the suburban Detroit area. No shipping provided.
Good luck bidding, nd thank you for taking the time to read through this advertisement.
