Description

Hello,

Thanks for looking at my listing! I must say I don't know a great deal about this car. I bought this from a friend who had sadly bought it from his deceased brother's estate about a year ago. Neither he nor I have been able to identify the manufacturer and/or builder of this car. The only paperwork is the Ohio title which lists it as a 1956 VW.

While my friend had it he had the gas tank boiled and refinished, s well as having the carb rebuilt and the car given a basic tune up (plugs, oints). He decided he was too big for the car and I bought it. I'm 6' 1" and about 240lbs. It's tight! But I love small displacement cars, ven if not particularly roomy.

I don't know VWs particularly well, 'm not sure what year pan this is built on, ut I seriously doubt it's a 56. Maybe someone can chime in when they see the photos. I was told this car had a Porsche engine in it, hich I doubted, ut in fact it does. I ran the number on the engine case (EC020524) and it comes up as a 74 914 1.8 engine. I'm not sure about the transaxle. The engine does pull well and seems to run just fine once warmed up a little bit. Since the tach is not working I kept the revs to a perceivedsane level but it seems to not mind winding out at all. I assume it's a stock engine, ut who knows. Oil pressure is good, rips a little, ut nothing out of hand needing attention in my book.

Clutch is smooth, ll gears engage nicely, o crazy noises from the transaxle or engine. Brakes stop well. Driving, unning, urn lights all work. Radio works. Speakers are behind the carpet areas of the door panels: nice and out of sight. It just dawned on me that while the radio does work ( I have not tried the tape player), don't know what it's using as an antenna. Frankly, just listen to the engine.

Mileage on the car since built appears to be just 3,663 miles. Before that I have not a clue. I have no idea what may have been rebuilt, eplaced or what not. Some components don't look all that old though, ee photos. The pan does not look to have any rot, ust surface rust. The body is in very nice shape. No signs of repair to it, r paintwork, xcept some brush touch ups of some scratches and rock chips. By and large the body looks darn good. It's fairly thick and not all wavy like cheap fiberglass. This body is well made IMHO. Nice and straight with decent gaps. Very few cracks in the gelcoat. Honestly it's surprisingly nice. I wish I knew who manufactured it.

The interior is pretty nice as well. Provided you like red that is! Actually, t just shows a little use, few spots on the seats show minor scuffs, tc. See photos. Seats are unique, 've never seen them before. Kinda styling! Certainly atight fit on me but I'm a big guy. I like using the taneau/moon cover, thinkthe car looksbetter with it on. I mean, ho's sitting in back anyways? Gives you a simple to access covered cargo spot.Currently the speedometer, il pressure gauge, mp meter, urn indicators, igh beam light, nd fuel gauge all work. The tachometer and oil temperature gauge are not. I have not tried to trouble shoot them, erhaps it would be a simple fix. Also, just remembered, here is no latch on the engine lid, he cable is there (and works) but the latch mechanism is MIA. The lid does not flop around so I don't see it as much of an issue.

All the chrome is pretty nice. Mirrors are a little more aged than the rest. There is a bit of rust on the wheels, ardly noticeable. The wheels are really pretty clean. They have actual spin off centers. I've not seen these wheels before and I think they're quite attractive. Opinions may vary---.

So, ll inall a pretty cool car. When you consider what real Speedsters are going for now----good lord----this is a way fun car that looks like the big time. Should be very easy to maintain and enjoy.

Personal inspections welcome, ar is in Yellow Springs, hio 45387 I'm Doug 937 231 zero one 93.
