1987-1989 are considered the best and most desirable years for the air-cooled Porsche 911 of this body style. Starting in 1984, he 3.2L “Carrera” was nice improvement from the prior 3.0L “SC” models and the biggest change being the better and more powerful 3.2L 6 cylinder engine. Other improvements included a better fuel injection system, etter chain tensioners and fog lights recessed in the front valence. That was carried into 1987 but Porsche further improved the 911 with the biggest improvement being the switch to the highly desired, mooth shifting, nd stronger synchro equipped Getrag G50 transmission. The G50 greatly increases the driving enjoyment with more confident shifting compared to the earlier 915 transmission which was also known for 1st gear synchro issues. The 1987-1989 911’s also have a bump in horsepower. In 1988, pproximately 2,115 911 Carrera Cabriolets were produced for the USA, xtremely few with this color combination. Air-cooled 911’s have greatly increased in demand and it makes sense why due to how unique, imeless, ell built, nd attractive these machines are.

This 911 is an impressive rock solid example with the desired history of being one owner and very original. This is a get-in-and-drive ready to enjoy, onest vehicle. Please view all of the 300 photos, he 12 minute video, nd the detailed description below to see just how nice this 911 is.

Exterior:

This 911 is a very attractive vehicle. The finish, ody, rim, nd other exterior components are in excellent condition and not modified. It is of the condition as should be expected for a lower mileage well taken care of 911.

The Grand Prix White finish itself is in excellent shape. It presents like a very well, herished, 5,000 mile, tored-inside Porsche should. The tint of white matches on all of the body panels. The quality of the finish matches on all the body panels as well. As much as white can, t has good reflection and is glossy. Please note the photo of the Porsche book reflection next to the body panels. Also note reflections in the video and reflections in the photos which are better noticed on the shadow sides. One thing that is very important is the finish is fairly uniform throughout. Please note the magnetic milgauge tool which measure paint thickness. The thickness is at the appropriate levels. It is good that it is not thick as that can result in cracking and other issues. Absent in this finish are issues like cracking, eeling, ignificant scratches, ad texture, nd etc. The finish is nice and looks how it should. There are only superficial marks on this car. The nose barely has any stone chips and is in impressive condition for the age. Both of the mirrors are excellent and with almost no marks. There are a few very light scratches on top of the fender that are not through the paint, re very difficult to notice, o not show up in photos, nd could probably be buffed out. The most significant spot, hich is still very minor, n the finish is at the outside of the driver fender where it meets the headlight ring, here is a light scratch and shallow ding. Again, he finish on this Porsche looks like how it should and is proper for the price this vehicle will command.

All of the glass is original with original markings intact and in excellent condition. There are no significant chips to the windshield. The convertible top is in very nice shape with just a couple things to mention. There is a small hole on the driver side about the diameter of a pencil. A repair using adhesive from the underside would take care of that. The plastic window is very clear and in nice shape, bsent of holes or significant scratches. The rest of the top is very presentable. The top raises and lowers exactly as it should and without issues. Part of the video clip shows this. The trim throughout is in excellent original condition. The rubber “accordions” for the bumpers are great, ot cracked or faded. The black on the spoilers are great. The black trim around the windows is great. The lenses throughout are great as well and not cracked. The whale tail is in great shape and without issues. Both the front and the rear spoilers are the actual original factory units put on the car from the factory as evidenced by the number code on the options sticker. The Fuchs wheels are the original ones to the car and in excellent shape. Most important, urb rash is absent from all of them! The white paint is excellent on them. The bare metal ring is very good but could use some polishing to remove some minor staining. To add to the originality and completeness of the car, ncluded are the unused spare, reat condition tool kit, nd even the Porsche supplied plastic bag and gloves! The convertible top boot (cover) also is present and is in very nice shape.

This 911’s cosmetics and body should meet the discerning buyer’s expectations. It is extremely presentable and in the condition as to be expected for a well taken care of lower mileage example. It does look as good as it does in the photos.

Interior:

There is not much to find fault with regarding this 911’s interior. Just like the exterior, t is in the condition as to be expected for a very well taken care of Porsche 911. The interior on this Porsche is a good place to be. Absent is significant wear, arks, r damage. It was never smoked in so absent are ashes, moke smell, ar, nd cigarette burns. The interior on this 911 is a good place to be.

The interior on this 911 is the very uncommon linen/light gray color. It is of course leather and original. The driver seat is excellent. The bolster and front corner are great and without significant wear. No cracking or rips. The passenger seat is even better. The backs of the seats are great as well. On the top of the head rest there are a few nicks, hich are pictured. The rear seats are excellent. The door panels are beautiful. The arm rests are not even saggy or cracked. The dash is excellent and without significant wear. The cover is not cracked nor scratched up. The gauges look great. The steering wheel is in excellent condition. The center console is in excellent condition. The leather around the shift knob has split a little but the boot is great as is the plastic. The heater control levers are nice and bright red and original, ot painted and non-faded. The carpet is great. The area on the driver’s side where the left foot rests shows a little darker but some carpet cleaner might clear that up. The rest of the carpet is impressive. The original floor mats are present and are excellent still! The have been preserved by being covered by an additional set of Porsche mats which are also included.

This is a light gray interior that has traveled 65,000 miles and existed for nearly 30 years! Light color interiors do not age well. The interior in this 911 is in impressive condition no matter what the color, specially for light gray/linen. That is just another testament showing just how well this Carrera has been taken care of and treated.

Mechanical:

Arguably the two most crucial aspects when buying a classic 911 is finding one with a rust free original body and an original engine that does not leak oil. This 911 is excellent in both of those categories. It is a pleasure to drive and drives like it should, s a well taken care of lower mileage example. Most importantly, he engine is in excellent condition.

The engine in this 911 is the original engine. It starts right up, he first time, very time, hether cold or warm. It starts up easily and without puffs of smoke. It settles into a smooth constant idle right away, ithout surging. The oil pressure is fantastic whether warm or cold. It runs at a proper temperature no matter what the car is doing whether sitting and idling or driving around on a hot day. The engine goes through the RPM range properly and pulls like it should all with that unique air cooled Porsche sound. The exhaust is in great condition and still retains its catalytic converter, nd emission control stickers. Most importantly, his engine is TIGHT! I have experience with multiple other classic 911’s and all of them dripped oil on the ground. It is very important to avoid a very leaky 911 as many times the remedy is a $6,000+ engine rebuild. This 1988 911 Carrera does not even leave a drip on the ground! Absolutely no oil leaking or consumption issues with this car! It is an amazingly tight and original engine. The engine has of course received normal servicing. The past maintenance includes regular oil and filter changes throughout its whole existence, n 2011 it received the cam and tensioner oil tubs replaced, il return tubes replaced, reather hoses replaced, nd the front main seal replaced. The ignition received new spark plugs, istributor cap, nd distributor rotor, lso in 2011. Other miscellaneous related maintenance includes belts, ir filters, nd fuel filter. The engine has the serial numbers of 930/25 64103667. The 1988 model year is a 3.2L air cooled six which still retains the great chain tensioners and improved fuel management system introduced from the 1984-1986 models. The 1988 also gets a slight increase in power from those earlier years. Please view the video to see how great this engine runs and that it runs properly.

This 911 retains its proper and original Getrag G50 five speed transmission. The VIN sticker is still on it as well. This transmission is in great functioning condition. It shifts excellently into every gear and does so without stickiness or grinding. The shifting feel is such a huge improvement from the 915 transmission and is worth the premium for the ’87-’89 models. The synchros are great. At 50,000 miles in 2011 the engine and transaxle were removed for inspection and light servicing. Related service at this time included new gear oil, ew clutch disc, ew release bearing, nd also an updating to some improved clutch components. The clutch is great, ngages appropriately, nd has a good feel, ith no slipping or other issues.

The brakes function appropriately and have received recent servicing which included the left front caliper being rebuilt, ront and rear pads replaced, nd fresh brake fluid. The car stops very well and in a straight line. The steering and suspension feels nice and tight and direct. There are no odd clunks or funny business. I recently drove a ’78 SC with 108,000 miles and that one cruised fine but when pushed a little felt loose, loppy, nd worn. This 1988 Carrera feels nice and tight. It rides how it should. It has the “made out of a solid piece of carved metal” Porsche feel even though it is a Cabriolet. This Carrera responds well to spirited driving as well as is comfortable when cruising. Tires are a normal wear item and the tires on this 911 are worn so the next owner gets the privilege of choosing what tire they would like to ride on. A quick search on TireRack.com shows four pages of tire options in the original sizes and numerous high quality brand ultrahigh summer performance options less than $100 each (ex: Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport).

The A/C system has received recent service and actually works! In 2011 the A/C system received new o-rings, new receiver drier, eak test, nd recharge. The heater and fan also work great. All of the gauges work including the clock. The speedometer/odometer has always worked. The CarFax, arranty booklet stamps, nd receipts also show that 65,000 miles is accurate. The audio system has been upgraded to a more modern unit but is still Blaupunkt brand. It sounds great and functions fine. Headlights, urn signals, nd brake lights all function appropriately. The windows go up and down very quickly, ot sluggish. The power driver seat works well. The locks are functioning. The convertible top goes up and down very nicely and properly, ithout issue. Included are the two original “Porsche” keys. One of the keys has the original bag and flashlight.
